Lifting >1 pin

Postby Trip Doctor » 21 May 2007 19:16

So I got myself the 14 piece SO set, and I am mainly using the short hook from that set to practice SPP (on a Kwikset and a Kwikset Titan). A problem I seem to be running into is that it's hard to lift up only one pin at a time. It seems as if the hook pick is too wide, and always catches a pin nearby.

Is this just an inexperience thing, or is anyone aware of this happening with certain hook picks? Anyone who bought and used SO picks have any feedback on this?

Thanks.

You might do well to take a look at Shrub's pin-feeling exercise.

I doubt it is a problem with your pick -- keep practicing and I'm sure you will get a better feel for it soon enough! :)

on the other hand, southord makes some really wide picks :? try putting your bird finger on the lock plug to feel the set when it happens, thats some advise I gave someone else recently and it worked for him.

Yea, I don't have much trouble feeling the set in the tension wrench when it happens. Just the pins individually, without interference for the other pins. I'm thinkin of grinding down the long hook into a short hook, because it's thinner, and I never really use the long hook anyways.

Good thing to know that someone else thinks the picks could be too wide though, haha.

the southord standard picks are massive in comparison to the slimline or Peterson picks. if you think you would be more comfortable with a slimline pick and you are doing a lot of SPP then i suggest the SO slimline short and long hooks or the Peterson short hook and the SO long slimline. although that would involve paying delivery twice.

I use my Peterson short 90% of the time but there are still some locks i need a southord slimline long hook or even a southord short slimline for. in fact i have my best results with the southord standard short hook on union oval locks for some unknown reason.

If you have the spare cash get a selection of tools and see what works best for you

All the best

you could always grind them down a bit and even put a little "V" notch in the tip for better feedback

or just buy slimline picks
