impressioning dimple lock

Postby ridderhenck » 22 May 2007 12:30

What material do I use in order to impression a dimple lock?
I understand the way of impressioning pin tumbler and lever locks but this one makes my head spin,I can,t figure it out.... :?

I hope this isn't advanced material (if it is please block/lock/erase or whatever) but here goes. There are supposed to be a couple ways to do it I think but the only way I know how is by using a dimple key for that given lock you are trying to impression and foil tape used by plumbers that you can buy at hardware stores.

The dimple key would need to have all the cuts at the lowest positions. So you would either have to ask a locksmith who would be willing to do this for you, or do it yourself buy getting a dimple key cutting machine but that is super expensive. I heard of some people getting good results by carefully using a drill press that they use in machine shops.

Once you got the key prepped with all the deep cuts made, you would then apply a single film of that foil tape I mentioned earlier on both sides of the key. After that is done just stick it in the lock and "wiggle wiggle wiggle" and the key should impression itself to the lock.

I may have missed a step or something because I've never done this myself. Just saw the video of Barry Wells demonstrating it at H2K2.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

That is true. You can do impressionning with the foil whitch is used by plumbers. The process is the same as explained. You have to cut the key on the lowest cut. You have to file the key blank too because of the thickness of the foil.
That is called automatic impressionning in France. But there is some problem with this method.
The first is if you have bomb pins. That is an anti-impressionning device because the pin won't be on contact and the foil won't cut herself.
The second is with some pins whitch are sharp so that they cut the foil to much.
There is another problem but it's very difficult for me to explain in english.
This method is generaly sucessfull with down-market dimple locks.
I think the best way is manual impressionning. The key preparation is the same but you don't use a foil but you put some tin in each cut.

There is different way to drill the holes. You can use a cutting machine, a dremel or driling machine.
To drill the holes you must have some information as the lowest cut , the number of pins and the space between each pin.

As a mod nothing winds me up more than this attitude, if your not sure then dont post and ask instead of posting anyway and hope its ok,

If it is sensitive info and its posted with this way of thinking with the idea that 'its ok a mod will sort it out' then we are the ones relied on to find every post made in a simular fashion which takes a lot of work,

What also takes a lot of work is now watching you to see if you do post somthing sensitive with this sort of attitude so that it can be removed,

Thanks for the extra work

As for dimple impressioning, if you have problems you may find that you often need to use a differant material inbetween the foil and key,
For more information search for the other threads on the subject, there was one only in the last couple of weeks that had all the methods on including what materials work well under the foil,
