When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I have a few store bought sets, but I find I am using picks I have made more and more. I just find they work better with my style of picking and feel better to use. Does anyone else prefer homemade picks to what you have purchased sometimes?

I'd say store bought seem better but I've never used store bought picks so I wouldn't know fully.

so many variables, manufacturer, type of pick, the person who made the tools and so on. the 1 advantage i see to homemade tools is the abaility to customize.

hey templates would be kool, just never use a grinder on brick strapping. It will kill the grinder.

I just made one out of a hacksaw blade using a smaller hacksaw and some beefy wire cutters. The edges are pretty rough, but at the very least it reduces the amount of filing required a LOT. I tried it out before doing any filing, and even with the rough edges and serration on the handle, it worked really well... wasn't very comfortable, but I needed to hold it for less than 10 seconds, so it wasn't a big deal. If anyone knows something better than a hand file and cheaper than a grinder to smooth the edges, let me know.

i've never used professional picks, but considering how easily i've already picked supposedly "heavy duty" locks with ordinary household items, with great ease and success, i doubt i'll ever need them. i might buy a small set to try, but i feel very comfortable using even just paperclips. actually, as opposed to using a micro-driver as a pick, i prefer paperclips because they do less damage to the lock and can be filed down more easily.
plus, i pick locks just for pleasure so it's always cool to know that you could theoretically break into someone's house with an office supply

HI,
I buy the Short-Jag pick, since it has a LOT or room for redesigning, and a Dremmel-Tool to make my "Custom" picks. ($3.90 USD) The link to buy the pick is: http://www.lockpicks.com/product.asp?0=213&1=227&3=215
NOTE: Order ONLY the one with a handle, or Call Customer-Service to order the one without the handle. ($1.50 USD) This site has a problem when ordering a SP-14 (No Handle), you'll get a SP-13 (Extraction tool) and you’ll be VERY disappointed. That link is: (But REMEMBER as of 10/1/2003 it’s still not right!) http://www.lockpicks.com/product.asp?0=213&1=233&3=264
I've told the site of the problem, however they don't have it completely ironed-out. So, ORDER The Top link!!!
