thin and thick picks? why?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

thin and thick picks? why?

Postby Cephalic » 27 May 2007 15:48

My girlfriend just got me the MPXS-32 from Southern Ordnance as my first set. When I look at the complete set, there are basically two versions of almost all of the picks.

There is a version with a thick handle (3 ply of steel with the outer two tack welded to make the handle) while there are duplicates of these picks with no handle and the entire length of the pick is single thickness of the pick end itself.

Why is this?
Do I really need both versions?
Is one to produce a different feel on the pins?

Thanks
Cephalic

In my experience when i started I prefered picks that had handles. They were easier to use. As I gained skill I got to prefer picks without handles. The feedback is much better. Try both styles, see what fits you best.

:P Many of us get together to pick given the right geographic coincidences.

Hey Schuyler, you head west, I'll head east. We can meet somewhere in Indiana to pick locks.
