Hey. Um...

http://www.clksupplies.com

OK so I found this old schlage lock with only like 2 springs in it. Also my KW1 spings are kinda funky, so I wouldn't mind picking up like 100 springs and springing up these guys. So...what are Schalge Cap Springs and Schlage Cap Pins? Or should I just buy some short and longs springs. Or wait, is it 2 dollars for just 1 spring? Or 2 dollars for like 10 springs? O no this could cost me. And as for some spools for my KW1. Should I get 165 or 190, what are the difference and how do I know which one of standard pins do I have on my KW1 lock right now?

Thanks.

Those springs you found arn't for use in the cylinder chambers for the pin stacks. They're used with that special pin for keeping the knurled cap that holds the plug in place from freely unthreading itself.

As for your other questions about pin sizes, take a look here at these charts. They have all the pinning information you need for a handful of locks. Including kwiksets. http://web.archive.org/web/200502151024 ... pacing.htm

Thanks. And I measured my springs, they are the "small" 7/16". Now the two things I still need to know, is which top pins do I have in my KW1 lock right now? When I go to the KW1 Spool pins page it says #1 and #2. Which one in normal form do I have on my lock right now? Really what I am asking is how do I find out/what are the measurements.

I'm looking at the chart in my pinning kit right now. It says that the OEM size for the top pins should be .180 so I would get one at least that size or else when you turn the plug, part of the spring will get caught in the bottom pin chamber and jam up things pretty good.

For measuring my pins I use a digital caliper I found at Fry's like this one, http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/me ... -150-2.jpg

OK. This is what I am looking at. There are two categories. Spool Pins, and then the specific lock manufacturer's spool pins. For kwikset, they have 2 types of spool pins, #1 and #2. Ya I have no idea either. And then in the generic spool pin page, they have .190 and .165 so I have absolutely no idea what to get. Probably .190 if nothing else.

Spools are spools and in my opinion it doesn't matter what manufacture security pins you use. I use the Security Plus mini pinning kit by LAB for all my spool and serrated pin needs.

I noticed the LAB security kit doesn't have mushrooms. Does anyone out there sell universal mushroom drivers?

Thanks

Ditto. The only mushroom drivers I've seen and held in my hands were those from a Medeco. Can't recall ever seeing a shroom driver from any other lock.

I bought a $3 deadbolt no name lock at a local store called Ocean State Job Lot (once called East Coast Market Place) and upon taking the lock apart, pin stack 1 had a mushroom driver! It was an exciting find. The lock had a KW1 keyway.

I should get in touch with that company and ask them to send me a bag of mushroom drivers =)

Ya I really want some serrated and mushrooms, Spools are easy to come by.

For me. I have a couple of locks. Locks I can pick EASILY, and locks I have picked once in like 20 minutes.

Can Pick

Master Lock 141
Master Lock 3
Corbin 4 pin (holy crap easy)
My back door ilco 5 pin
Kwikset 5 pin which i made into a cut away :)
1 dollar padlock, Insert diamond, apply tension and jiggle open.

Locks I can't Pick.

Master Lock 140
Crappy Master Lock imitation bought at drug store.
Master Lock 5
Slaymaker padlock
Other padlock that you can't get ANY TENSION on. put the wrench in, turn, and the plug doesn't move at all.

Security pins

Postby Raymond » 3 Jun 2007 1:38

OK yous guys. How bout making your very own spool pins. Just put a regular pin in a lathe (if you have one) or a drill. Use a triangular file to put on serrations or full spool cuts as you please. You can make some really wierd looking pins.

Try cutting off a small length of screw like a 6-32 to use as a pin. Smooth off the ends and you have a security pin. I have even heard of tapping the lock case and plug ans using threaded pins. The will freeze at each thread but the key isn't so smooth going in and out. I recommend using at least one normal pin at the key tip to keep all the other pins moving smoothly with the operating key.

The main difference in the two sizes - 165 or 190 is the length of the pin. When pinning a lock you should use a short top pin with a long bottom pin and a long top pin with a short bottom pin. This is called balancing the stack height. It prevents crushing a spring and smooths out the lock function. On some locks using too long of a top pin will push off the spring retainer when the key is inserted.

Yale used spools for many years. Russwin-Corbin also used them. I have recently seen newer Schlage and Kwikset (Titan) deadbolts with spool pins. I have even seen cheap import locks with spools. LAB makes spool pins and many distributors sell them.

Good luck.
