that is a unique antique lock, I suggest you examine the buttons to see if there is smooth polished finger wear on any of the buttons,
You will regret any damage you do to that lock, but its a great start for a collection of antique locks.

is that ebay or did you find it around dallas?
look for the finger polish also around the buttons on the surface of the clamshell case. there is tarnish on the bronze, but the polish is a smooth surface, you may need to try to examine it with a ten power lense or better to really see this, you may also find that different colors and intensities of light may help. you could attempt to put a shim in it but don't try that too hard, as it could damage it. if you did get it open that way, you may be able to see the mech better through the hole.

this lock looks awsome. i found this picture (data mining is my day-job) and i'm still lookin for more info for ya. Its hard to read but you can. You just push the buttons down from the front in the right order. The owner can pick the combo as well,, so if that helps anyone visualize the inner workings.. anyway here's the ad

also note the 40000 combo's. So you must be able to pick the number of buttons used in the combo as well.

i just caught the line "8 of them on each side" so pushing 1 way or another changes it (they consider them different buttons) so the combinations would be
16! (which is 16*15*14*......*2*1).
Thats if you use all so you have to add if you only use 15 then 14 ... so
16! + 15! +14! +......+2! +1!
then you have to subtract the repeats and theres only 16 combo's that use the left out button last [hence repeats] so the total repeats would be 16 + 15 +14 +13...+1 as which is 136 (a small number)
long story short mathematically there should be just above 22,300,000,000,000 combos, (ways to arange 16 things + 15 things etc...[minus repeats])
which is good news cause they claim there is only 40,000 wich means at any given time there are actually 558109813 DIFFERENT combinations that will open the lock.
lol that was fun.. i would recommend every get and learn to use Matlab.. its can be interesting.
So ForFun just start hacking away at it, although there are 22,300,000,000,000 combo possibilities 558109813 of them should work due to machanical limitation so that leaves you a 0.002% chance of guess it right.
ps. still look'n for more info for ya though its look'n scarce.

SemiShady, Thank you so much for the literature.

I've just received some additional info. I won't post a email I received but I'll extract a couple of lines. This is from a locksmith that owns three of these locks. "I also have copies of the original pamphlet that came with these padlocks, copies of the patent application/illustrations, and instructions for changing the combination"......"I've discovered a non-damaging technique for determining the combination of these things."
This information was passed to me second hand but I expect to have the email address of the locksmith shortly.

I have a lock like this. It is newer, not round, not american brand, but a pushbutton. square buttons. there are 10 buttons. and you have to press in 5 of them. thenthere is this little thing at the bottom of the lock and you pull/push it in and the shackle pops up. I could post a pic. To my knowledge besides shimming it is unbeatable via picking/cracking/hacking/bypassing w/e...
