Need help with a Chateau lock

I am trying to help a friend get into her storage unit and the key has been misplaced. She really can't afford to pay a locksmith and he said that he will drill it.

It is a Chateau lock...the round type like storage places usually use.

Is drilling it something that I can do?

I am a complete novice at this...but not an idiot.

We don't mind totally destroying the lock...we just need to get it off.

I think usually drilling might take a little practice if youve never done it before, and you need to know what you are doing.

i dont know the lock but as far as i can see if your not willing to learn how to pick and need to get past this lock quickly and u cant call a locksmith, probably drilling is the best option.

these sort of posts seem to be on the rise - the one time pickers - not really interested in the hobby just need to get the help to get one lock open - thats it well this is a hobby site

just take a drill and drill out the whole key whole and a bit above and below it if you dont are about the lock. bassicly rape it with a drill and then hit it with a hammer till it falls off.

If you do a search on the forum for "drilling" you will have your question answered. There are a few good posts some with pictures. Sometimes it might be easier to break the box itself instead of the lock. Use some common sense and the tools you have available. If you are not that savy I would suggest going to a locksmith (perhaps its cheaper if you bring it to them). Bolt cutters might work.

If you go to FAQs and read the LP101 FAQ you will get typical information about picking and perhaps find enough information to try it yourself.

If the storage company issued the lock, perhaps they have copies of the keys?

I am assuming storage unit may be anything from a storage company which they should have the key so you can ask them. But I did make the asumption in my post that they meant a "box" which they keep stuff in.
