Repinnable Cylinder Problem

Repinnable Cylinder Problem

Postby RockInBlack » 9 Jun 2007 9:28

OK, I have a repinnable cylinder on my padlock. They are all serrated and spools. I took out all of the top pins except one. Now the key wont even work and I cant get it open to put the pins back in. I tried picking, but that pin has a really low cut on the key, so it false sets every time. Any ideas on how to open the lock?

You did remove the bottom pins and also the springs as well didnt you?

Check you can account for all the springs first off,

Otherwise you should be able to put the key in and turn it unless im missing somthing?

If youve put the pin back in the wrong place then you can cut a new key with that cut in the right spacing to open the lock, alternitively only push the key in so far that the cut is in the right place for that pin,

Otherwise only lift the pin up a small amount if its a low cut,

Unless somthing is jamming the lock i cant see what the issue is with only one pin in it :?

Please elaborate as im sure i must have missed somthing,

Nevermind, I got it open and fixed it all up. I actually took out all of the bottom pins except one, so I had one bottom pin and 5 top pins. Still don't know why the key didn't work.....

It's the bottom pins that determine the sheer line. Don't leave anything in a chamber if you're not going to have everything in the chamber.

springs

Postby raimundo » 10 Jun 2007 8:54

springs if left in a chamber can enter the plug and cause problems as they will be half in the plug and half in the upperbible. if you force such a thing to turn, the spring gets dragged into the space between the plug and cylinder, this will cut into the brass until it jams the lock good. so always account for all the pins, a long hook pick will reach into the upperbible and find them if you are not sure. or if you have the cylinder apart, just rapping it on the bench will shake them down.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

I've jammed up a spring in a lock that way so many times in the past.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture
