Heya all, you'll have to forgive my newb'ish questions. I have not long started playing with locks, and have enjoyed my time whilst experimenting. Having picked serveral of the cheapy locks from around my house I found myself needing a bit more of a challange so I trotted on down to the local B&Q (DIY store) to buy a cheap brand name lock...
I came across the Masterlock 140.
It looked nice and the name seems to be rather well known, whilst still costing less then a Fiver. So I took it home to be my new friend...
Now, I wanna kill it...
Can anyone tell me what is inside this lock? The pins seem almost eager to set, make a yummy clicking noise, but still refuse to yield to my meager skill. I am unsure as to what sorta padlock would contain spools/mushie pins (would seem to me that it would be a lock worth buying and prolly costing more) and other posts Ive read have made vague references to the fact it may have spools... can anyone confirm this?

I own a #140, and mine has 4 pins. It may be different though, so take a short hook or something- place it as far back as you can go , raise all the pins, and slowly pull the pick towards you. Count the clicks.

Sorry if I phrased the question wrong mcm151201, what I actually meant was what type of pins were in it, as it doesnt seem to yeild to strait forward picking for me... tho you are right, it does have 4 pins... Do you know if it has any spools/ mushroom pins?

Oh sry my bad... I read it wrong.
The master 140 has no special security pins. It is more difficult to pick though- I havn't been able to pick mine yet.

I also understand that my picking must have improved, as this lock has 3 spool top pins out of the four. Sorry Jabial, my assumption as to the cheap price of this lock has probably misled you. My apologies - personal research is a wonderful thing!!
Quotes are of Mad mick stripping a Master 140 padlock.. Many thanks for that mate. Seems I should serach more thoroughly next time...

Master Lock No.140 has mushroom pins.
by the way, this lock has been discussed for many many times, if you use the 'serach', you will find a lot ofinformation.

Yungning, is it mushrooms or spools? Im thinking its spools. Some of the 140s Ive seen have only had one some have had 3, but there is going to be at least one. From my experience, its usually the 3rd pin in.

Master 140 has spools, not mushrooms. I'm pretty sure the maximum is three, as a normal pin is required for aligning the plug. Otherwise, you'd have a hard time inserting/removing the key.
If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!

Master 140s do indeed have spools, and they can have anywhere form 1 to 3 of them. mine has 2.

AFAIK, the #140 has only four pins.....If you are counting the blanking plugs on the side of the lock, you will see five, but the last one (nearest the shackle) is a long pin which holds the plug in the lock body via a groove in the plug.
If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!
