ball pick making

What is the best way to machine the ball on the end of a ball pick? And what is a good size for the head.....right now its kind of a funky .25 inch ball ..but I think that might be a bit too big.

I made one a while back when I was really into homemade pick tools. Just did it by hand with a file very slowly and carefully. Came out pretty good until it broke.

Seconded. Use a needle file: the pointy one with one arched face and one flat face.

I made these long ago, but you can see a single, double and a triple ball in this pic.

I used a Dremel while quenching often to remove the bulk material and finished with needle files and sandpaper.

Do a search and you will find more information and discussions on these.

In fact, they are to scale with SO. The pick length and width is very comfortable to me so I used a SO Rake as a handle template and freehand drew a template of what picks I wanted to have.

Yo, Kaotic, when you take pictures of picks always put the hook with the artistic handle in, theres not enough photos of it on the site, that pick shows where your at in the pickmaking.

which needle file to use for the round pick?, use a flat one, flat files make convex round easy, use round files for concave grooves.

its very difficult to file flat, usually the file dips on both sides, making a dome shape. when making a round shape, you use this effect to your advantage by rolling the file across the metal that is, you change the angle of the file while strokeing,

Thanks Ray. I do however still make picks with the heat wrap on them but those I use just for picking and not really showing. Though all my tools are usable I have gotten to make them much prettier.

If you like that pick (Tech), you will also like the pick set (Tech2.0) I just recently finished today for a fellow member here.

As far as showing my good picks, I was thinking of either making a sig that linked to a slideshow of all my picks or making a sig with all the cool picks on it. What do you?

I would link to it so we can see them close up. You bring a much more artistic flair to pick making. Everyone else is all just functionality in terms of making picks. Bloody jewelry makers
