A bit of fun auto pickgun make your own elastic powered pick

Postby Shrub » 22 Jun 2007 4:27

Ok so this is no special gun or anything that can be used on the job but it is a bit of fun that some of you may want to use as a base for your own experiments,

My brief of this project was to make an auto pick gun that can be made with house hold items, a handful of hand tools, be able to be made by anyone and made in less time than it takes to remove the spam from this site,

I could of course gone out to the workshop and come back with a fully auto electirc epg but ive been there done that, i wanted something so simple its almost genious,

I will say that this is unfinished as can be seen but i have no time to bring it along any further, it was only a proof of concept and that i think ive done,

This thread is made to try and get your imagination gogin, build on this or make your own, use any sort of power you can think of and see if it works, elastic power is very useable if its harnessed right and im also a big believer than a lockwork one would work even better,

This one works as a pick gun should but its obviously untested in a lock and i doubt it would actualy open any lock in its present state,
The movement needs limiting and more power (gained from a better cam profile) needed i would think,

Right now the basics are here if you want to develop it, ive stopped here to get your imagination going where as if it was presented here complete it would simply be copied,

Theres other ideas like a trigger on the side that traps the cam until ready for use and a adjusting screw that wil limit the travel of the arm,

Anyway, its only a bit of fun to try and get some young minds working, do with it as you will but please dont copy it to other sites,

Shrub,

Does the bottom rubber band seem to be strong enough to get good action out of the gun? 8)
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

of course the cam could be smaller, and the windup could be on the far end. but it is interesting, you could put more rubber bands on for more power. very interesting concept

Zeke,
To be honest the band on the end pulls the arm into the body and stops it moving if its any tighter,
At the moment it works if its helped so it needs more designing and playing with but i dont have time,

Ray,
Thanks mate 8)

Thoughts were to use a spring for the arm,
Use a trigger to stop the cam rotating when not in use,
Play with the concept of differant bands and springs, fans and fly wheels,
Wind up handles for the band,
And of course the cam needs sorting, i tried a wheel first as i was goign to make a cam and directly connect it by a screw that could be moved closer to the centre or not giving differant stroke lengths,
Carbon fibre arms, a movement limiter for the snap or raced bearings, the list goes on and is only limited to imagination,

Really for this configeration it needs the arm on the centre line or at least the bit that the cam hits, as i made it for a differant arrangement that wasnt considered,

Have a play its only a bit of fun :P

It probably wouldn't be too hard to build a rubber band gun into it :-D. Even a simple one where the band is held back by a clothes pin.
If the lock is frustrating you, at least you can shoot it!

Other than that... I guess to limit the stroke you could install another cam on the side above the arm. Hold it on with a wing nut so it's easy to loosen and adjust.

Ok i knew this was a crappy idea but thought it would spark at least some interest, ive altered the title as it might have given the wrong impression and bump it with the hope others may like to develop the idea,

It looks rad, but tough to make if you aren't that good with wood. Also, if a handle of some type could be attached to the rubber band thing to make the wind up easier. Also if you could somehow, by tightening something...idk...make the turning a little slower. I see this thing in my mind, just after you let go of the rubber band, the thing going 1000 mph for like 1 second and being out, if you could slow down the turning of the thing to make it somewhat longer, but fast enough to open the lock.

Also, What about some other type of turning? I was thinking like a big spring...or a small electric motor...but then it isn't manual... I think it is a good idea if we could get some people's brains moving here....but...Again if you aren't too spectacular with wood like me, you can't make something like that...like me... :(

Hey, I could replace the rubber band with a torsion spring!

Maybe a gearbox to amplify the winding like clockwork.
One turn of a rotary handle could put 5-8 pounds of pressure on the
spring, but only a few onces of pressure are released to bounce.

wind it for 5-10 sec and power it for a full minute.
It shouldn't require too many cranks to open a lock.

Are these the kind of ideas you wanted?

A flexi-hose from a dremmel could connect it to a stationary bike.
-Imagine the look on someones face if a locksmith pulled that out of his van.

Hey I think this is a great idea, I mean yeah it aint pro or anythink but the concept is brillian, you could add a spring instead of elastic for a little more power. I think Ill make one and then put up video, thanks for the idea.
Click click click those pins are moving for me
