Master #576

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Master #576

Postby Bud Wiser » 21 Aug 2006 18:33

I just got a master no576 "Contractor Grade"
"High Secirity" 1-3/4 (44mm) Solid Brass

Major disappointment. Just as easy as the no3. I tried to pick it briefly in my truck as soon as I got it. At first I thought it might be a challenge, tighter key way, so I put it away and saved it until I got home.

Opened in less then 20 seconds the first time with a sm hook.

Looked at the package again and found the suggested uses:
Tool Boxes, Gang Boxes, Trailers, Gates, Fences.

So what makes it High Security and Contruction Grade?

As far as I can see only a dual ball locking for added protection from prying and hammering. Every thing else is basic brass padlock.

Basic 5 pin cylinder thats too easy to pick.

Looks like you nailed it...

From http://www.masterlock.com/cgi-bin/produ ... at_id=D576 :

"Solid brass body is strong, durable and resists corrosion
Dual ball locking for added protection from prying and hammering
Hardened steel shackles for added protection from cutting and sawing
5-pin cylinder for maximum pick resistance "

Masterlock went way out of its usual way by making an unshimmable lock it seems, and feels like they did enough to merit the words "high security."

heh. (my Masterlock 220 was the same way... http://www.masterlock.com/cgi-bin/produ ... mplate=app)

I almost got the master no220, it looked good! I got mine at Lowes. They have a large selection of master locks with demos locked on display hinges. Wonder what they would say if they seen some one try picking the demo's? Would save me some time :)

I'm gonna have to find a Big Lot and look for that 6 pin Guard Brass padlock.

I just picked up a No.576 from Lowe's yesterday to play with while I am off work for the holidays. I spent about 5 minutes on it and it wouldn't open. It kept false setting and when I go to relax tension I always drop a pin or i'll try to SPP it and get the small hook jammed up when it false sets. It must be the way the pins are staggered in this one (hi-lo). I have a Master No.532 which is a similar but stronger lock and I can open that one up in less than a minute. I can even rake it open sometimes , but for some reason SPP works quicker on my 532.

Spoke to soon. I sat down and relaxed and she opened in about 2 minutes. These locks, like the 140,532,576 are kind of fun for intermediate level lock pickers. However, I noticed that some 140's open real easy so they can be a beginner lock also. For some reason, the 140's with the real high first pins give me the most trouble.

I just got a 576 today and I'm having trouble with it. Tried picking and raking, but neither works for me. It seems like no matter how much tension I use, the pins don't want to set.

They always seem to move freely and I never feel them catching. I've tried just pushing the pins to the top and using tension to keep them there and raking them while lowering tension. However, the pins just don't hold. I can't even get them to stay at the top. Has anyone ever encountered this situation before?

I work at a Michigan Lowe's. I've bought every lock they carry, and they're mostly simple locks, with the exception of the bike locks (those are fun)

The only one's that offer any REAL fun are the Master #532 (I got mine open in 8 sec)

Anyways, its been forever... Glad to see everyone postin ;)

dropping pins

Postby raimundo » 20 Jul 2007 8:05

two of the above posters, seem to think that 'dropping pins' when picking is some kind of problem,

the concept is not to just make the pins stay up, especially if a bottom pin is staying up,

If a pin drops, it just resets the collumn, that is OK, sometimes its a pin that broke at the shearline before its time, and some other pin has to go first before this collumn.

Many beginner pickers make the mistake in thinking its about makeing the pins stay up, its not. if pins drop, no problem, you have a pick in the keyhole, lift it again, or lift another pin first.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
