Dead pins?

Postby Bashy » 23 Jun 2007 16:22

Hey all, new here. I'm having a bit of a problem...

Earlier today my younger sister decided to have a go at my door and managed to get it locked and shut with everyone on the outside. Now, this wouldn't be a problem except we've just moved into the house a few months ago and we don't have a key for the door. We phoned the previous owners and in the 8 years they've lived in the house, they never locked that particular door.

To make a long story relatively short, I've been on the door all day with homemade hook picks trying every method I can read about online. Unfortunately, and this is the problem, the pin that is in the front of the lock seems to me to be well... "dead." When I push the pin up with a pick I feel no resistance from a spring or anything.

Could it be that this pin is broken and my door won't unlock? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get back into my room. I'd rather not call a locksmith because according to the yellow pages there are none nearby.

Again, this is my first time on the boards and if this is the wrong board for this or if this question has been addressed elsewhere I apologize.

im a noob and all, so dont go bashing be for anything anyone

is the pin at the bottom of the chamber (ie locked, sorry i forget the term) because the spring might be dead. if you can, toy to lift it up (assuming it is the last pin unpicked) slowly, and constantly try to turn the lock. otherwise try to get a pro to do it.

As stated, it could be a broken spring. The lock should still pick just fine if you take your time. Look for the binding pin first and pick others that bind after that. I dont know how much you have read, but the first ppin will not always be the pin that picks/binds first. I suggest looking at the Locksport international guide to picking and read up on it.

Here is a link to the guide http://locksport.com/home/index.php?ent ... 027-222056 .

Out of curiosity, what brand of lock is it you are working on? A picture of the door and knob would all of us answer your question better.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Another great thread showing why you shouldnt be playing with locks in use or what may be the case locks that arent yours?

Can you tell us where you live as some of us may want to start advertiseing in your local YP as most YP will be full of lockies that domnt tell you where they are and instead claim to be IN your place of residence to get your business,
I know for a fact im the only lockie in my area but the yp is full of people from out the area advertiseing that they are in the area if that makes sence,

So to that end i say i dont believe you and think its moe that you dont want to spend the money and are more after a cheap fix,

I think youve damaged the lock and it needs replaceing, if you cant replce it you may as well call a lockie to come and open it before replaceing it, if you leave the lock on the door its likely to fail and if that happens in a fire your all dead,

I suggest call a locksmith and keep the lock for playing with afterwards then come back asking how to fix it,

So you have been outside reading about everyway to open the lock on a computer that usually sits inside?

Are you using sticking to type the keyboard through the window?

Seriously, call a locksmith.

I love these threads
