That's why I ask the customer if they would like me to record the information for future work. Considering that I do the same for locks I master key-- I save the system so that I can expand on it later, I see no harm in offering the same service to my customers with single keyed locks.

It also allows them to ask for a new key, without me charging them for a lockout call. A premium service most locksmiths do not offer.

Oh, though on the subject... there are some locksmiths and alarm companies that specifically advertise in newspapers that they provide key retention services in the case of emergency or lockout.

This would be especially true for highly secured properties with entrance gates, so that police/fire can respond to an alarm call or so the locksmith doesn't have to destroy expensive locks if the key is lost. This tends to be popular among older folks, but should be something that more people entrust with a trustworthy service.

Just me personally, when I do a rekey I offer the same thing raccoon. I have a MISC system dedicated to of each the main keyways I use (sc1, y1, kw1, m1, etc) in my masterkey software. If they so choose, I will take a bitting from that chart and key them up to it ( no master pins obviously, just using the bitting info) and add all of their customer info, address, phone #, etc. This information is retained for later use. When they need extra keys they just call me up, I cut them and they pick them up for cut key charge. If I deliver them I do charge a service call fee. Needless to say in most cases they find a way in to pick up the keys.

For security, I do use password protection on the software itself and a secondary encryption on the masterkey files themselves.

And I wouldn't sell anything less than the HS stuff we sell and give the customer the impression that they were buying HS locks. I can see how what I wrote makes it sound like I'm advocating telling customers that their Everest cylinder is impregnable. That's my bad. Sorry.

Hmm hang on i think ive got the wrong end of the stick here,

For some reason i thought you were gogin on about new locks you were fitting to residential properties not master key system control,

Sorry, i agree that master key system control and retention is a part of a locksmiths job, theres a few bits of software out there that is just for keeping key codes for key retention services,

I guess it was late when i read the thread

Shrub,

I DO retain all bitting info on non master systems if a person so wishes. I just simply setup a few misc systems in my software and use the straight bittings (no master bittings) to cut keys to that. When they are locked out or need new keys I simply cut one by code and they can pick it up for cut key costs or it can be delivered for cut key costs + service call charge.

I as I said, use a couple to a few setup systems with different OEOEO or EOEOE settings and skip blocks of keys to ensure that someone down the street doesnt have a key with only one bitting difference. It works well and I do not repeat bittings between customers.

It is more of a conviniece factor for them. They can either choose to use it or not. If they do not like me having the bitting on record they simply choose to not use the service. Most however after seeing thier kwikset open up anywhere from 5 to 60 seconds figure what is it hurting that I know the bitting  .

I aim to please :P

Zeke, got a shovel? as mine is too short now for my hole,

Ill say it in the opposite way i think as im comign across wrong (or maybe even missing bits of text out when im posting late at night lol),

I think all key biting retention is totally fine EXCEPT in the cases where the customer does not know your retaining them or want you to retain them,

Surely this has explained myself better
