how do u make padlock shims

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I have always used the wide style bobby pins and filed them down flat, and they seem to work pretty well for the cheaper combo locks .
Master locks combo's though seem to have a little less give in between the shackle and case, and the bobby pin must be filed much thinner, but with a soft touch, and pumping motion while raising, and lowering the case from the shackle success can be achieved rather quickly.

perhaps your design is OK, but the lock you are doing either requires A. 2 shims (1 per shackle opening) or B. the lock is not of the style that can be shimmed.

stick around and learn to pick. =) The shimming is a neet-o trick to say you've tried, but picking is far more satisfying.

also, I hope this lock belongs to you and isn't some lock on some locker at school. that would not be cool.

one thing I noticed with my soda can shims which DO open Master No.3's easily is the part which actually locks into the cut-outs on the shackle will tend to tear into the newly made shim, so you have to remove them and use scissors to cut a new edge.

good luck, you'll get it.

Shim material

Postby Raymond » 28 May 2007 12:33

Howdy folks,
I've been making padlock shims for years now from the flat return springs that come out of auto seatbelts and broken measuring tapes. Use the return spring and not the tape itself as you want a really tough metal. Shape it with scissors and polish the edge very carefully. If the edge is sharp you will cut yourself while using so make sure it is dull and smooth. Give the shim a rounding by holding it in a vise with the round shaft of a screwdriver and hammer it around with a plastic hammer.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Death, if you have somthign to say state it on one thread dont simply copy and paste your same reply to various threads,

To everyone else please use the padlock shimming thread that is not only stickied but has videos, pics and more pages than a repeat thread will ever get,
