89 Jeep ignition Key Lock Broken #2

Postby Dale7905 » 28 Jun 2007 14:26

Hello All Again,

My first post was the first time I visited this forum. Thanks to _all_ that responded. After reading them I thought I'd post a bit more info on my problem and say thanks to everyone who responded.

I'm a pretty senior citizen ( retired electrical engineer among other things) who has almost always been a 'do-it-yourselfer'. The old Jeep is mostly used to haul stuff (got the right front and rear seats removed to give added room) and has some additional problems that I expect will come up shortly. Keeping it going without a big cost is one my challanges. Fortunately I have another car and my wife has one so the Jeep is kinda an 'extra'.

I'm going to swallow my pride and check all this out with a locksmith .... which I should have done in the first place to save me a lot of time and frustration. But then again, I never would have found this great forum !!

Thanks again for all the prompt responses. I'll let you know how things work out. Now for my afternoon nap. Maybe you all will need one too after reading this long post.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Alot of steering columns can be tricky to deal with when not having the right knowledge and/or equipment.

Don't forget to fill out your profile so we know where your location is, for future refference of other questions you might have.

Welcome to the site,

This probably should have been attached to the bottom of the other post :)

Another option by the way (provided you didnt drill your cylinder to caput) would be to get a hold of the blank for that model, and then try filing it yourself.

The problem with your old key could be that it has worn out... By rounding the cuts up (to the next level cut) you would bring the new key to where the old one had once been.

If your still having trouble with the lock, think the key was the problem, and none of the administrators have a problem with me telling you the dimensions of depth for cutting that key; I will help you out. (but I'm new here, and not 100% sure if I'm allowed to just say those sorts of things in the public sections.)

I simply couldnt be bothered reading your post properly so just removed the blocks of text in which you explained what you did with the lock,

A word of advice to you if you plan on sticking around,

Read the rules, if you dont you will end up banned through misues of site,

DO NOT REPOST a thread you have previously had locked, if a thread is locked its no alowed and you DO NOT make another one,

I am hopeing that a 3rd one will not turn upo but if it does i shall reccomend your removeal,

Auto discussion of ANY TYPE is banned from the open forums and i just happen to be very very strict on that so you can pretty much start to imagine just how pissed off i am right now after having to edit and lock a second thread on the subject made by you,
