Hello,
I was wondering, how do you hold the locks in place when you are picking? I know a vice is probably the best method, but I'm thinking in making a holder alike this http://www.lockpickshop.com/TRIPIK-WS.html .
Do you have any successful projects for that? Preferably for diferent types of locks/cylinders, and even padlocks.

Are you picking as a hobby? Or as training to be a locksmith? For hobby holding them in your hands works great. For locksmithing having them in a vice is better so you get used to picking not holding them. I learned that the same lock feels totally different when it's mounted rather than holding it.

While I have a vice, I only use it for lever locks, all others I use my hands.
I did try to train my cat to hold them, abject failure

freakparade3, I will be picking just as a hobby, but just as you said, I know that locks feel diferent on the hands and mounted. That is the main reason I want something to mount them. Get the a feeling of the real deal.
Padlocks especially should be very diferent on your hands than on a chain or on a locker.
By the way: here in Brazil locks are mounted with the pins down, you insert the key in the "teeth" facind down. Is that any diferent from picking with the pins up? Looking through the forum and the net it seems that Brazil is the only one to do that, what other places the pins down are standard?

Most like to use one of those small vices that are on a ball so the angle of dangle can be ajusted to anything,
Most locks can however happily be hand held as suggested and this means you can simply throw a lock and pick in your bag when goign out for practice (laws providing that is) or simply and comfortably sit in front of the tv or lay in bed etc,

definitely
make your own " holder "
you'd be surprised
what a creative mind can come up with
it doesn't have to be pretty
just as long as it works

I too am thinking about making some kind of thing to hold my locks while picking. Id probably prefer to make something similar to the link you gave rather than using a vice. Except id make it bigger to hold twice as many locks. This is just so you dont have to fiddle around with it as much.
I hav one question though, do you get more or less feedback when picking a lock that is mounted? Or is this question far too general and differs between different locks?

I use this, http://www.panavise.com/ . Will hold just about any lock out there. Can be screwed down onto your work bench or use this attachment here http://www.panavise.com/viseimages/bmounts/311.gif if your don't want to drill holes into the corner of your computer desk. Uses nylon jaws so you don't have as much danger of over tightening and warping the lock housing which is easy to do with a regular vise if you tend to be heavy handed.

Eyes_Only, that vise must be excelent to hold locks, but I think that its a bit overkill.
My primary goal with a lock holder, is to make it lock look and feel like it's mounted...

Yeah it is kind of overkill but the other commercially available lock mounts just have too many limitations so I opted for the Panavise. Was kind of pricey but well worth it in my view.
Plus I use it for tons of other smaller jobs like for re-pinning locks and making precise filing on keys. And I can mount it onto the corner of my computer desk so I can browse LP101 and pick locks and stuff from the same desk.

I can pick much better when holding a cylinder in my hand, but not being able to move the cylinder, and picks in my hand I don't get it.That's why I'm going to make a solid mount out of an old door that I have. I have a few door knobs, and deadbolts to mount on it.I hope it comes out good so that I can feel the latch work, and hope to learn how much tension to use
