i think the most important thing behend it is the stylish improb kinda feel to it. People with money can do anything. They can buy the most hightech picks and tools. If you could do the same with simple paperclips, It just has a cooler edge to it. If you set yourself on using your tools then you become handicapped. Dependent on them. Yes it is obvious that piano wire makes a better pick then paperclips, but if you could open the same lock that you opened with wire, with paperclips....well...its just cool. Kinda like using a banana for a bump tool, or using a bic pen to open a bike lock. I am pretty sure that a tomahawk makes a better bump tool then a frozen banana. I mean come on guys, a banana?

"Ideal" clips found at staples are a great alternative for the weak paperclips. Ideal clips are a lot stronger. I always keep a few handy in case a file cabinet needs to be opened or such

Well... I got a little hairpin thing that might be useful... so I'm gonna post it here if anyone actually decides to seach and find this. If you're still around, hope you don't mind Sams Choice, this isn't exactly from paperclips, but close enough. Figured better adding this here then starting a new thread (You can keep your hair Shrub ). (Surprised this didn't get stickied.) Unfortunatly Raimundo's thread turned into rambling and got locked up.

Hairpin with rivet off. (With some hairpins, you will be able to just break it off, with others, you have to sand it off.)

This won't bend up and down nearly as much as a paperclip so there's an upside, but it's pretty thin, so it'll bend side to side pretty easily. (I guess you can think of it as a super slimlime .) The length is also another downside, but that can be varied by finding bigger/longer hairpins.

Also, if you take a look at the 2nd image, you can see that it's possible to make a weird double wafer rake by bending both the 'picks' back 180 degrees and then twisting them, but the hairpins break before they bend that much, so you might have to experiment with heating it up if you want to do that (don't know much about that so can't give you any advice).
