Files...

Postby Daniel's Locksmiths » 5 Jul 2007 14:45

I'm trying to find where to buy some files for key cutting etc...

All the one's I've seen at my local hardware store are to thick to match up with the thickness of levers,
I bought some Needle files and they are quite small and would take ages to shape keys!

Any help on where to find some?

Also I'm have great difficulty in finding anyone who stocks T.CT. drill bits for going into Hardened Steel.

Any more ideas?

Many Thanks. :-)

You're in Wales, so I have no idea if you can get HPC there, but HPC makes a small set of locksmithing files that might be just right.

Are these for impressioning or for general keymaking? For impressioning you want a very fine cut (swiss #4 i think).

The files are to cut away mortise keys around wardings,

My key cutter can only cut away the front section of the bit, not the back as the bow of the key gets in the way.

Is there a web site for HPC?

warding file

Postby raimundo » 6 Jul 2007 8:32

What you are looking for is a warding file, comes usually in bastard, (crosscut) but I prefer mill (once cut,) for the finer cuts, bastard is good for deep cutting and mass wasting, mill has a fine finish surface of the cut. Look around at other trades that use files, jewelers tool jobbers will know someone at grobet swiss. or bludan or whatever.

dog

Postby raimundo » 6 Jul 2007 8:37

My discription of a file has been mauled by the filterators.
Just to clarify a 'dog' file is one of unacknowleged parentage cut in two angles crossing. while a file that has one row of teeth is a mill file. A warding file typicaly is of this dubious parantage and while flat with cut edges, it will taper to the tip in a knifelike shape across the width of the file. Each varient of the file has its particular uses. this one was made for warding. so.....
