Am I getting more preasure then normal?

Postby Micheal_Kane » 13 Jul 2007 21:47

Hi I have been playing with locks forever and even picked a few with paper clips. I recently have got really into it. I have called around and asked a few locksmith stores in the area if they sell lock picks very fast I knew you need to be a licensed locksmith to get them da da da da da. So I have made some with brass.... CRAP! They bend! Now I am working with hair pins and they work great and I am popping open locks left and right well 2 still very fun! Tension wrench is made out of a larger hair pin and the picks I have made are finger or feeler and a half diamond picks. They work great I have been pushing the diamond in and out around 2 or 3 times and my 2 locks will pop open (4 tumblers in each) The thing is when I go in to use my feeler to open the lock it is so hard to push down on some of the tumblers I have only opened open of my 2 locks with my feeler. My picks are hard on my hands oww very hard so my questions are.

1. What can I use for a handle for my picks?

2. For me it takes a lot of pressure for me to press down a tumbler I am not pushing to hard on my tension wrench! Is it really this hard or it is me not having proper picks or the bad handles for my picks or... is it my cheap lock? Any help will help a new person like me. So please post.

Thanks

Proper picks will go a long ways toward better picking.

You can answer your first question by searching the site.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Hi, you really don't need to be a locksmith to order lock picks. Try an online store line lockpickshop.com. The LSI lock pick guide has a 10% off coupon, i think it was LSI

It's been posted before, but getting yourself at least a beginner's set of picks is going to be benificial and will go a long way towards enhancing and increasing your skills.

I will continue by saying that even though hair pins are not quite exactly what I would consider "real tools" as many others will tell you NOT to use hairpins, paper clips and other various household objects not specifically designed for lockpicking, I think you should use them every now and then for familiarity purposes. The reason being is because you never know when you're going to be out and about and not have access to a lockpick set. Use them on a regular basis, no. But every now and then, sure why not?

Even if you're not going to dive into the field and it's going to be more or less a hobby for you, part of being good at what you do is being able to improvise on a moment's notice.

Welcome to the forums and happy picking.

Do a quick search on making your own picks out of hacksaw blades and tension wrenches from stainless steel wiper blade inserts. You seem very handy in making pick tools and it sounds like you're doing pretty well for the materials you have been working with so far so give a proper DIY tool set a try.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I will try to make some more picks out of harder metal like steal. I only have a dremel tool and grinding was hard. I think I will use the cutting tool and only use my grinding tool when I have to. Thanks for helping me this is very fun to learn.

What in the world are you talking about Mr. Kane,
brass happens to be the best lockpick tool material made, ever!

Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.
