REVIEW: Picks by LockNewbie21

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

REVIEW: Picks by LockNewbie21

Postby digital_blue » 5 Apr 2007 22:20

I've been meaning to get to this for a couple weeks now, but since I'm in review-writing mode...

I recently purchased a pick from LockNewbie21 (Andy). I've noticed over the last while that he'd developed quite a reputation as a pick maker, so I really wanted to see his work for my own eyes.

The immediate reaction upon pulling the pick (and tension wrench) out of the package was that it looked HOT. Andy has clearly put a lot of thought and effort into every aspect of pick making. The shapes of the picks were both functional and attractive. To a certain extent, it seemed somewhat "different for the sake of being different", but I saw nothing wrong with that. Much of the detail doesn't appear to me to have any specific benefit to the actual use of the pick, but it makes it look really, really cool... and I like that. Now, if the picks weren't very good, and all the rest was just eye-candy, I would have been disappointed. But the picks did not disappoint in the least bit. Their finish was wonderfully polished and smooth and the handles are exceptionally well made and well thought out.

Very nice work Andy! I'm well pleased with them, and the reputation was warranted!

I havent purchased any of his yet, though he did mention to me that he sent you one.

From his pictures, I highly doubt anyone would be disappionted with his workmanship. Keep up the good work LN.

Stainless, I go a bit thick with the actual tang, but in all honestly if finished properly, you can cheat the picks thickness and have a much more durable pick.

Spring steal honstely jsut doesn't do it for me. So I use it what i think it's best for.. handels

I have another set I jsut finished, I will take picks of that later. Also I jsut spoke to skyler in PM that I will be posting pictures of his deforests with burnished handels before they ship.

Heh, wait until you see the rubber grips on my new ones.. there quite interesting

cut off wheels sometiems layered, carbide bit, twin wheel grinder, lots of sand paper, silicon lube (foam), heat shrink, lighter, polishing compound, buffer and bonding agent for handels.

Also ray will stress this, my trusty needle files and diamond files.. things are invaluable for only 1.50usd at harbor freight.
