Starting on a Master No.3

Postby Sleaze » 10 Jun 2007 12:45

Hello,
I'm new here and have been researching lock picking for the past couple of days. I'm going to make my picks tomorrow with one of my friends table sander(using hacksaw blades), and I already have my tension wrench made out of a small screwdriver. I'm going to make a small hook with a rounded tip and a half diamond.

Anyway, I was rummaging through my basement and found a padlock (Master #3). Would this be easy enough to start on? What type of lock is it exactly? how many pins does it have, etc, etc?

Any tips for a new lock picker?

Thanks
Sleaze

Since no one has answered this I'll take a shot.. hopefully i won't get flamed too badly :)

According to the master lock website:
http://www.masterlock.com/cgi-bin/product_detail.pl?dir=/residential/homeyard/&displaynav=&sub_cat_id=D3&template=style
a #3 has 4 pins. Since you have it already you might as well pick it! :)

A #3 padlock is considered by many to be very easy to pick.
It took me a couple of hours to pick my first master lock #3 :) pretty soon i got it down to a 20 seconds.. You'll probably want to pick up a regular lock cylinder soon.

Since the lock has been sitting around you may need to use some sort of lubricant. Most people on this forum would say NOT to use WD-40. I'm not sure why not to be honest.. Search around and I'm sure you'll find the answer to that one.

Since i've been trying to pick the master#3(which is about 3 days) i only got it open about 4 times useing makeshift crapass picks,So i hope when my reall picks come in tuesday i can pick the lock with some practies (of course).I find the easyest lock to pick is a wafer lock(you can find these on desks, cabinets, etc.

OK
Yes the master no3 is a 4pin with standard key and driver pins. so no tricky security pins. it has been discussed many times but ill give u a couple of lines for this particular lock. Push the plug back so it doesn't catch on the over plate. and make sure the tension wrench isn't catching on the edge or front of the cover plate.

As for an oval top hook, its down to personal preference but I think you will do better with a flat top, you will drop less pins.

the only thing i think that is wierd about the master locks is that the plug is always very loose and it is kinda hard to figure out how to apply proper tension

but after a few times it gets easier

My first lock was a masterlock #3 and in my opinion it is one of the easiest locks to pick, I think its the best lock for a first lock.
