Hey guys I'm bran-spanking-new here and I did a good hour or so worth of reading and believe me a ton of my questions have been answered but this one remains;
what physically can I pick with my MPXS-14 beginner pickset? lol "locks." I know. But what? Padlocks? Can I pick open padlocks? What about car doors [does alarm go off if you get it open]? What about the common household door that has that weird bolt thing on the inside that turns to lock it?
What's the limit on to what I can't pick?
Thanks guys!

You are basically limited to pin tumbler and wafer locks. Auto discussion is limited to the advanced forums.

You can open just about anything they sell at Home Depot with a South Ord pick set.
Most of the other pick tools are just slight variations of the basic pick design for specialized use sometimes. Don't let our "I love my Petersons" or "I have to get that John Falle set" comments discourage you. SO makes pretty decent picks that can perform very well if used properly.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

OI
" i love my petersons"
But at the same time, I find SO picks are better for some locks because they are slimmer. I could open any lock i can open with my petersons with a SO set (and i have). but I DO get better results with my petersons when the key way allows it.
SO are great beginner sets. and I love them to this day, infact i still prefer a SO long hook to a peterson gem. but I would say that a Peterson hook is a good addition to any hobby pickers collection of tools.

I'm surprised some members (... like UW or Shrub ) didn't get on that line.
Depends if an alarm is installed bud... but what does that have to do with locks and picks?

If you are practicing opening car locks removed from a vehicle that you acquired from a junk yard like how hobbyists should be doing the alarm will not go off. I always believed that "Do not pick locks you depend on" rule would apply to cars as well.

Well im not here 24/7 so i can only get on things when i can but it was somthing i picked up on as soon as i read it,
What are you trying to do?
What do you want to pick?
Are you stealing?
I have NEVER worried about the alram gogin off, a hobby picker would also never worry about an alarm gogin off because of the reasons stated like the locks wouldnt be on a car anyway,
I leave this thread with the impression yur up to no good but give you a chance to explain yourself me laddy,

I'm willing to practice a good thirty minutes to an hour a day. No I don't plan on stealing anything, I like the idea of being free and able to go into any room I please. Mainly around my highschool, I like exploring, especially at night and I'd like to get into buildings and the like. I'd also like to be able to assist my friends if they get locked out of their houses, haha can you imagine that I just whip out my lockpick set "bam! open!" =] Also most places I'd like to get into for exploration purposes (around my area there's all these fences that keep us out from the hills... they have padlocks on them) so that's why I asked if I could pick padlocks, they have the little key thing on the bottom as you guys know. Also I'm sure I'm not alone when saying this is a FUN hobby, I just want to make sure my investment of time and money doesn't leave me dissatisfied with only being able to open little timmy's lunchpail :[ Thanks again ^^

Well freak luckily I didn't.......
Boy, your are an idiot, a fool, and a criminal. You don't need picks, cause with your level of competence the only thing that will follow will be being handcuffed and beaten in to submission by a cop and then thrown in to jail where you'll get married to a 350lbs filipino named Tiny, and he'll consumate that relationship all over your face.
so how do I put this nicely ... your type isn't welcome here... now piss off you shite stain
