Clown, do you want me to add to your poll an option 'none of the above i dont rate the style of tool' ?

Out of any ive seen Kaotiks home made one is te best ive seen,

I guess if your stuck any one of them are up to A job but what scenio there is where your in that predicumnet i dont know unless your 007,

I could handle the shortness of the picks or even a poor form on the tip but its the weight hanging on the end thats the worst and once you have removed the tips they do end up too short,

A cross between the credit card set and the jacknife would be good,

Individual picks held in a holder that fits in your pocket,

I use my own version of that and thats a small set of real picks that fit all the criterea 8)

If i was given a jacknife i would put it on my van keyring and propably use it for scraping much out of locks etc, i can just see it now as hats what im like lol youl al cringe at this but i use my falle set as screwdrivers and muck scrapers alomst daily as i dont rate them for picking with,

Yeah, if someone made a jack knife type pick set that you can put on your key ring but is designed so you can take each pick tool out of the "handle" and use it like a normal pick tool I would get one.

HPC makes a nice mini pick set thats designed into a tri-fold wallet that I got a few years ago but decided not to carry it around with me because as of the moment I'm not a professional locksmith and the pick tools are totally visible when I open the wallet. I just keep it as a emergency pick set for my car for now.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Maybe you could try just putting lockpicks on a keyring? Has anyone done this? just drilling holes in the handle and maybe having one or two on a keyring. Then again, in a pocket i suppose the tangs may bend or break and you'd still need a tension wrench somewhere on your person, walet maybe?

think about it. you're out somewhere, say.. camping, or boating. you get a call, and it's a 1 hours drive back to your house\shop, or a 15 minute drive to the lockout. you turn up, she's got a busted arse double-wafer sliding glass door lock, you just pickup your keyring, and pop it open.

Yes, you could do it with improvised tools, or carry around a pickset all day everyday, but really, there's living to work, and working to live. locksmithing is my job, it's not my life. do you see builders carrying cordless drills on them, to dinner and a movie?
a jackknife set crosses both fields, it's small enough to forget, but looks professional enough not to give people the idea that you just got out of prison.

yep, that's pretty much it. I would do the same thing. I usually get calls from our main shop than can be horribly short "25 Robet st, lock won't work" (see? wtf does that mean? key broken? lock jammed? have they turned it the wrong way? have they retracted the key at the 180 turn, forcing the pins out of the covers on the bottem of the cylinder?)
jump out of the van, key's in hand, assess the situation "oh, there's just some bugs packed in by your key", whip out extractor, clean it.
job's done, and you didn't have to walk back to the van.

...I know, I'm a lazy one.

gutterclown- i have played with the HPC one and thought it was total crap, i have a Southord one and find it very useful for smaller locks, mostly wafer lock, i have used it alot of times where i might need to open a cupboard lock or wafer lock and cant be botherd to go back to my van to get it, with sometimes might take 5- 10 minutes to get to it and back, having the jacknife set does make it easier but if i know i have to open a lock i do take my proper picks

"er... you mean opens all old style rim locks"
"NO NO! ALL LOCKS! I WAS TOLD!!!"

Interesting !
I have the Falle set, and as much as I try, I don't really rate them either.
Lovely to look at, but my trusty Southord hook does the job, not as nice to look at but it does work!!

Every so often I try out the Falle picks , get cheesed at not being able to open an easy lock with em and go back to the Southord hook.

I assume you were using the fiberglass version of the SouthOrd Jackknife. I had one and it sucked like no other. Ordered the metal version, worked liek a charm (for here and there)

Except I lost it last week and I am SO pissed. I had a charm made of serrated pins I defeated out of my hardest lock on the key ring :(
Always looking for the next best lock; never disappointed!

Lol exactly what i do,

From what i know the falle sets are bought by people who are reccomened them,

At the begining people bought them because they are Falle's then people bought them because everyone said they should buy them if they are after the best,

Unfortunatley the best doesnt mean the most expensive and ones made by a well know and respected tool maker, the best to me means a tool that opens locks easily,

The tools seem to be owned by the professional who uses a pick gun or drills locks, they dont tend to be used for picking as they have merely been bought because they 'are the best' its why i bought them afterall but wish i hadent wasted my money,

My point is most i speak to use guns but own the fale set, none can open a lock with them any better or quicker than a cheapo set of picks picked up at the wholesalers,

I appreciate and understand that there are many who use them daily and swear by them and to those i say im jealous as i would like to use mine but dont,

But this is only my opinion,
