If you seriously want to do it as a hobby you might want to consider bugging locksmiths in your area to do odd jobs and stuff and perhaps become an apprentice. This way you can get no complaints at all from your parents, and you can buy the nice tools.

There are sports clubs in germany and holland that do picking you may want to look them up and mention those. Toool and bleh something else do a little search for sport or something, we are normally fat bastards so it should be easy. It is not like we talk about our soccer match on the weekend or something.

I would also look into the laws for your state/country and if you find out its perfectly legal to picklocks in your home then your dad may be a bit more responsive.

Read through the whole forum, i am sure there are other comments i have missed but this thing comes up every now and then. And you will learn heaps.
Consider me inactive or lurker.

Hobbies?

Postby Romstar » 8 Jun 2004 16:53

I don't know what your parents are on about. Well, come to think of it actually I do.

They are among that group of people who believe that only cops, and crooks have lockpicks. Maybe spies, and of course locksmiths. No decent person would want lockpicks. I'll bet at this moment, they think their child has been hanging around with the wrong crowd, and is about to embark on a criminal career.

Talk to your parents. How do you know if you want to do something as a career? You try it out. If you wanted to take up working on cars in your spare time, they would most likely support you and even assist in buying and making tools.

Lock picks are tools. They are the exact same things as the ratchet set, and wrenches I am sure your father has. They are tools meant to perform a task.

The dictionary defines as hobby as:
An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

Oh, and about collecting things? That's got to be one of the most boring things I can think of. Why do you think there is such a huge interest in plastic model kits? Because people like to "work" at their hobby. They like to have a goal, and consider working toward that goal just as important as reaching it. There is a great feeling of pride after you have done something, or made somthing or fixed something with your own skills and hands.

If you have fun picking locks, and you aren't doing it as an income source, you have a hobby. If you discover that you might want to do all of the work being a locksmith entails, then you may just have embarked on your first step of a new career.

Bear in mind that there is so much more to being a locksmith than simply picking locks, or opening cars. Rekeying locks, installing or replacing locks, cutting keys and more. There is a lot to this job, and some things you might not even have considered.

If on the other hand, you simply have fun picking locks, and value the exercise it gives your hands, your mind, and your dexterity then you have a good hobby that may very well compliment whatever you choose to do in life.

Tell your parents to calm down, relax and talk rationally with you. This is a good hobby, a good career, and a great way to have fun and make friends. You trusted them enough to ask for their help, that should show you are at least serious enough about it to want to share it with them. Perhaps, in time your father may become interested in it himself. I've heard of family businesses starting in stranger ways. :D

The best of luck to you, in all of your endeavours.

Keep going for the summer job route. You will learn a ton and either have tools, or the knowledge to make your own.

Parents and preconceived stereotypes

Postby Romstar » 8 Jun 2004 17:24

I do indeed know all about parents. Or. more to the point in my case, grandparents.

I believe Marso had an excellent piece of advice when he suggested you bug the crap out of some poor locky about getting a job. Maybe even an apprentice position.

At the very least, go talk to some of these guys. See if you can find one who is willing to talk to you openly. After that, drag your parents to see this fine upstanding member of the community.

I'd love to see someone tell a locksmith that only crooks have lock picks. In addition, see how your parents react when you tell them that you saw a really great car that would be a good project for you to fix up and drive.

I'm serious when I say that I believe they would respond very favorably to this. If so, then you have to ask them why they think being a mechanic is okay, but being a locksmith isn't? :?

This may take time, and I think that perhaps Marso's idea may be a good way for you to make a decent end run around your parents, make some cash, and show them that you aren't going to be the next Charles Peace.

I honestly think though that you are going about this in the proper manner with your parents. I just hope they listen to you.

Yes lockpicking is a hobby.

I would suggest having you parents take a look around this forum to give them an idea of our attitude toward using this skill for illegal purposes.

Ask your dad if he has ever heard of perfectly grown men building remote control scale model ships equiped with BB cannons, and putting them on the water for the sole purpose of shooting the crap out of each other's ships.

These model ships can cost as much as $1500.00 or more depending on the size and the equipment on board.

I can name dozens of hobbies he's never heard of.

Get him on the internet. Take him to some of the more reputable sites where you can buy lock picks. Get him especially to this site, and get him to read. There are over 3000 members here, and they are from all over the world. I am personally in Canada. I think all the 50 states are represented. Australia, the UK, Germany, Netherlands and more.

This is an international hobby. In some countries where people aren't so afraid of such things, there are organized sport groups. They have been mentioned here already a few times.

This forum alone counts several law enforcement, and retired law enforcement officers. Locksmiths, myself included, mechanics, chemical engineers, and people of all ages. In addition, we have several military people here. Not to mention, this is one of the few places where I have encountered women in this business.

This is without a doubt not just a profession, but an ever growing hobby.
As Varjeal has mentioned time and again, many of the old locksmiths have a poor attitude about training new people simply because of their own mistrust. As a direct result there aren't a great deal of people actively jumping into the industry. It's certainly not as big as auto mechanics, or even plumbing.
The more new people who become interested in this business, and hobby the better.

I hope you get the job you want.

There are lots of interesting people here.

We have computer specialists, auto mechanics, locksmiths, repo men, a biologist (me), an owner of an online retailer of picking equipment, members from every permanently inhabited continent. We have 13 year olds and retirees, college students, apprentices, experts in high security systems. People here speak spanish, french, finnish, afrikans, american english, english english, german, dutch, and probably at least a dozen other languages. We certainly are a diverse group, and certainly a community.
