Problem with NEMEF cylinder locks

Postby Axilithor » 26 Jul 2007 10:47

Hi there. I'm picking locks for 3 months now and i made some improvements in technique trough the time. My first obstacle were those stupid mushroom pins in cylinder locks, but i managed to pick them. The trouble i now have are NEMEF locks. Someone gave me a bunch of cylinder locks, a few cheap locks, a pfaffenhain and some NEMEF locks. I can opent he cheaper locks very easily trough raking. I pick raked the pfaffenhain (6 cyclinder) with succes 2 times. But now i can't manage to pick it again. Very weird. I even managed to pick it under 30secs. I'm very comfortable with raking, but i keep getting stuck at the the real picking. I can't even set one pin in those NEMEF locks. It's really frustrating. I tried playing with the tension. Put a lot of tension on it, didn't work. Almost no tension, didn't work either. I tried a lot to find out the pressure, but no matter what i try, i can't set a pin. I guess the tolerance is really low in these locks.

I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Of course, i keep practicing and practicing, but it's frustrating. I think i take some of these locks to the lockpick club, so i can see what they do.

Can you single pin pick or do you normally rake?

If you normally rake then thats the problem, you dont quite have the skills needed when you get to a better lock that wont rake or scrub open,

If you can single pin pick then maybe your level isnt just up high enough yet,

From what you say about light or heavy tension im guessing you dont SPP or you dont understand how lockpicking works (spp), if thats the case click my www button and have a read up of the pdf we made,

Basicaly the tension you need is just enough to set one pin that will be the first binding pin, anymore and you are binding more than one pin and have no idea whioch is the first pin to bind thus enableing picking,

You pick pins in order of their binding and if you get that wrong the lock wont pick, your getting the wrong binding,

You say you are good on mushroom pins maybe your now stuck on spol pins and thats the problem but you say you cant set one pin so i assume its not,

Maybe your just not pushing the pin up enouhg, this can be seen by laying your pick next to your working key and see if the amount needed to lift to the highest cut is the amount your lifting the pick in the keyway,

I really do think this is a case of running before you can walk and you should go back to a simple lock and repin it to 3 pins and then get god at spp to crack this one,

If you are a good picker via spp then you have to start assumeing the locks were given to you because they are faulty second hand units and they may infact be damaged to the point of being un-pickable,

Thanks for your post.

The locks i have are mostly without key, but some are with a key. They work smoothly with the key. No problems at all, so i guess the problem is me, and not the lock :P

I do have experiences with spp. I have two cheaper locks which i can pick easily by spp, and in one there's also a mushroom which i can feel very well. I let back some tensions and push it further, and it opens. I'm still a newbee, but i really understand the way of spp and different sorts of pins. The problem i have is just that i don't feel if the pin binds or not. In the cheaper locks i really feel that the pin binds. I feel it on the fingertip of my index finger when i apply pressure on the tension wrench. It pops a little bit further. But with a nemef or pfaffenhain lock, i just don't feel a single thing. I tried all the pins. Played with the tension, but i can't seem to set a pin.

I'm a member of Toool in Holland for a few months now, so i'm going to take these locks to the next sport evening.

In the mean time, i keep practicing of course. Barry's quite good with picking locks. I once gave him a lock i couldn't pick for hours, and he picks it in 1,5min :') It's just not fair :P

There is possably a pin in the back of the lock which needs setting but im not familer with them without some research,
It could be somthing as simple as the cam has to be engaged before the plug will rotate,

Toool will be able to sort it out for you but dont get them to pick it open that defeats the object, get them to tell you how to pick it,

What exactly do you mean by "it defeats the object?". I would be glad to see that someone really can open it, so that it is really me who's the problem ;)

This pissing shitty site ive just lost another page long thread to it,

Im sorry but im not gogin throguht hat again,

Basically i meant that the enjoyment is in working out the lock yourself, if it cant be picked then you finding that out and why and then maybe rectifying it is part of the enjoyment, barry saying its broken because he cant pick it could lead you to throw the lock or never ty again when in deed its his skills lacking,

The enjoyment i in picking somthing that you then see everyone else struggleing with, my enjoyment in this instance comes from the facial expressions that say jees shrub can pick this but i cant get anywhere and thats why the locks will so readily be taken off you at toool and handed back open, its the challenge that we do it for,

To see how its done, that its possable, what tools to use, the binding order, special charectoristics etc etc only leaves the actual inserting of the tool which youve been told to use and lifting the pins, wheres all the enjoyment in that,

Its up to you thought i am just explaining what i meant by counter productive, i just meant you would not be getting the full experiance from it and by seeing if a lock is damaged or not or in your case getting someone else to it is a big part of lockpicking,

Have funa nd i hope you open your locks but in saying that i mean i hope YOU open them
