Can ANYONE do lockpicking?

Postby darksidedsam2 » 27 Jul 2007 8:18

Hi all.. I was a member of this forum ages ago, then i got wrapped up into other skills. i have bought many padlocks to practise , but lockpicking is something i am finding overall very difficult.

This is quite frustrating for me because over the years i have been very good at many different skills, i like being very multi skilled.

I have learnt how to make and do a lot of things in my time so far. From when i was young i learned -

Model kits - one of the first things i was very good at, i used to love putting them things together.

Archery - I gained the accuracy very quickly. I enjoyed doing archery a lot. I have a recurve bow and a crossbow - for target practise ( the crossbow is just for fun)

Bowmaking - then i moved on to making my own bows. Many cuts come from this, but some of the bows i made were very powerful. I was very impressed with myself

Lockpicking - i had a bike lock and i was wondering if i should use it ( it was a cheap padlock) to secure my bike. I bent the end of a micro flat ended screwdriver and got a paper clip. I opened it after 2 minutes. I was like wow i didnt think that was possible, i thought that only happens in the movies or by proffessionals. I did later find out it was a 2 pin padlock so that is why lol.

Then i hopped onto Southord and i got my first pick set. I bought a tr-circle 256 padlock and i could not lockpick it. I tried for hours. Then i come on here and i learned how to rake using the snake lockpick. I tried for about an hour. then i tried different methods then it opened. Thats when i realised it is possible.

After this i sort of give up on lockpicking, it didnt hold much use to me. But it was a skill i had not got to a satisfactory level of skill. Meaning i wasnt that pleased with how far i got with it.

Chainmail armour making - After lockpicking died on me, i started making some chainmail armour ( im still doing some of it now) I did complete a whole chainmail shirt and a coif. http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/6434/image021yg9.jpg
Thats a picture of me wearing my chainmail i made and my helmet i bought ( and wielding a blunt 2mm edged sword , that i payed £30 for )
At the moment im making chainmail coated gautlets.

This load of writing shows something. I am a skill horder. I like learning skills just for the purpose that it is something in my knowledge. Lockpicking is something i believe i have failed in. Can anyone do it? or are some people not meant to be.

Some people are NOT meant to do lockpicking, but I think you're not one of them!

Maybe you thought that you were going to learn it in a short amount of time, like Model kits(no clue), but lockpicking is not like that, practise hard for one year and then come back and make a new evaluation!

the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.

Being involved in model kits, bow making and putting together a chain mail armor shows you have a great deal of technical ability and are good with working with your hands so I don't see any reason why you can't pick locks again.

Just get a solid practice routine going starting off with really easy locks and slowly move on up to more difficult locks. We're all mostly hobbyists here so theres no rush to get better at picking real fast.

No. It's mostly a hobby for 18 to 25 year old hot blonde girls with large breasts and long legs. After all most of us on here are hot blonde chicks with the occasional loner 23 year old guy. I think the ratio was 14 hot blonde lockpicking chicks for every male on the forum..

lockpicking is not going to be learnt overnight, you need to put in a lot of practice.
you also need to learn to relax whilst your picking, its too easy to get frustrated and disheartened and thats why so many give up.

Your post I quoted above shows me that you have not done much reading on the subject of lockpicking. Instead of jumping right in try reading the LS guide, the MIT guide and everything you can find on this site. Before you can pick a lock you must first understand how they work. Good luck, now start reading young grasshopper.

i did do a lot reading and trying to understand diagrams but i dont understand too well. All i know at the moment is that instead a pin tumbler, the pins are made up of a pin, then another piece of pin then a spring and you have to get the pieces alligned with the " shear " line of the lock in order to open it. * gets reading *

You haven't researched enough to dive right in. Before you built bows you obviously knew the ins and outs of them and how to use them as well as how to make them properly. Locks are exactly the same in that respect. You need to take them apart many many times and get to know how the mechanisms work and why they work. If you're trying to pick locks without knowing any of this you are doomed to failure. You can't manipulate a lock if you don't exactly know why they can be manipulated. Read, read, read, read EVERYTHING you can find, then start from the bottom. Take it slow and you'll get results.

Some Tri-Circle locks can be a pain to open, so go get as many old and new locks as you can.
Also find the sticky on learning to pick starting with one pin and moving on by adding more pins, it's well worth the effort.
Lastly if it was real easy to do, I would have given up years ago, it's a challenge the harder the challenge the greater the reward :-)
