How can you tell which way to turn the tension. If u lost the key and forgot which way to turn. Other thing when can u sure the pins are in place.

Which is harder padlock or door knob.
By the way haven't got my tools yet ordered friday and i'm loving dis site.

Practice locks will mostly turn either way as theres no door hardware to stop them otherwise,

Padlocks will tension in the direction the plug moves the most,

Experiance in tellign the direction is just part of the learning curve and changes on each lock,

If the pins are in place the plug wont turn with the wrench, if there are no pins in place the plug will turn,

What makes and models of padlocks or door knobs? you can get a rubish padlock and good door knob or a bad door knob and good padlock, we need brands,

If you mean which is easier to learn on then neither, get yourself a cylinder that can be re-pinned,

This is what I do. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, clear my mind and imagine I have the key in my hand and proceed as if you were going to unlock with the key.

More than likely you would have developed a sense of being able to know what direction to turn the lock with the proper key without getting confused everytime through daily use.

But of course every lock may turn a different direction so this would only work on your lock because I assume thats the intention.

But please do not pick locks you use and depend on on a day to day basis. There has been many threads of novices trying to pick the lock on their front door only to cause damage.

Well i would say what kind of lock pad deadbolt etc.Normally if you put some tension on the wrench either dir then rake pins they will bind in the correct dir and wont bind if it doesnt.At least thats my exp on which dir to turn and as always thats the trial and error method.If you pick one in the wrong direction use a plug spinner or repick it the correct way.And since your just starting PLEASE take note and do a search before posting and also dont ever think it wont happen to me and play with a lock that is in use or not yours.Hope this helps and good luck hope you enjoy all the info on here...james
