Easy way to disassemble Master Lock No.1?

Postby occulum » 31 Jul 2007 2:32

Hey guys I read jebu's guide to disassembling padlocks, but the only problem is, i dont have most of the stuff he says to have, things like a dremel, mig welder(o.O).

Anyone have any ideas? Im trying to disassemble a Master Lock no.1, long shackle(that what its called?).

My tools are limited to the basic toolbox kinda stuff, pliers, drill, screwdrivers ya know :P

Thanks!

the only way to get laminated locks apart is destroying them. you could get the core out but there really is no point as without the spring in the back its nothing like the actual lock. that and masterlock cores in locks liek this are crimped on the back so you cant really repin them easily.

Why are you wanting to do it?

If you want to do this to a) see how it works, b) learn how to pick, c) see what your doign wrong then do not do this for those reasons as it wont help,

If you want to do this to make a cutaway then maybe its not a nice enough of a lock to make the effort worth while,

I smashed one up the other week to see if a certain bypass was possable and to be honest your not gogin to get anything decent out of it, the lock part itself is so cheap and nasty its not worth the bother,

??Taking apart Masters??

Postby Raymond » 31 Jul 2007 19:52

I agree with Shrub & John. As a prcticing locksmith I know there are many ways of taking one apart and putting it back together in a usable but ugly way. BUT, why would you want to other than idle curiosity. The time spent doing this is definitely not cost effective. You can order a new rekeyable Master with the same keyway and do everything you want except change the shackle length. The double crimped cylinders can still be easily rekeyed. The shackle is held in place by one layer of lamination that is pressed in as the lock is being manufactured and is not removable in any practical sense. Get a better lock and have fun with it. See my byline below.

I was going to disassemble it just to see what was inside, and to learn how to pick.

Picking up a cheap kwikset deadbolt for further learning :P
Thanks for the quick responses though :D

hacksaw

Postby raimundo » 8 Aug 2007 15:52

use a hacksaw and cut at 45 degrees to the corner, on a single lamination on all four corners, this will reveal the insides, and destroy the lock in a way that does not destroy the information inside.
