My lockpick sets - Anthing that would be worth adding?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Is my pick set good without additions?

My lockpick sets - Anthing that would be worth adding?

Postby r0b0t1 » 30 Jul 2007 21:18

I finally got to thinking about posting my pick sets and asking what I should add. (I searched for Ideas - haven't found many. I was going to add a bogota, please do not suggest that)

Oh, also, do you think I would be able to use picks intended for use in American locks to open European and Japanese locks?

Both sets are from HPC. They are not recent.

Here is one of my sets. Call it set #1:

Here is another of my sets. Refer to as set #2:

And, if you are going to say "search", please say something productive in your post also - thank you.

You definitely have a pretty good variety of tools. Many picks, many tensors.

The only other things I would get are some varied hooks and maybe a flat serrated tension wrench like in Kaotik's how to here: viewtopic.php?t=17220

If you don't got Ray's Bogota's..... you don't got a full set.

In case you don't get it. I specified "Ray's Bogota" for a reason. I could pull out my tools and make a copy of a Corvette, but it probably won't work as good as an original................ Food for thought.

Have a look here in case you havent already:
viewtopic.php?t=17326

Those will give you a good idea of what picks are in others' sets. You didn't mention if you were looking to add store bought or homemade picks, so if you can make descent picks a King and Queen wouldn't be a bad choice for add-ons.

Picks are for there intended use, meaning standard sets are primarily used for US based locks and slimlines are used for european locks. It is possible to switch them around but it all depends on skill and keyway factors. Basically use whatever picks work providing you know the lock in question.

+1, they really are very well made, I couldn't even come close to the quality he provides.

As for standard tools in euro locks... well you can on some. but i have a couple of locks i cant really use Peterson standard tools in properly, never mind standard sized tools (like southords standards). a decent set of slimline tools is a must for a lot of euro locks.

but apart from that you have a nice selection.

All the best

I would add some slimline picks. You will need them sooner or later, and it is frustrating if you sit in front of a lock and you can't pick it (perhaps just one pin is missing) because your hook's too thick. Also get a variety of hooks, lonk ones, short ones, thick ones, thin ones... you get the idea :)

I recommend the Peterson slender picks, their deep cut access picks and the falle safe clone picks by lockpicktools.com

I feel people who put polls on these sorts of threads do not bother to read the replies and instead simply look at the poll for a quick yes or no answer so i refrain from answering for not only that but also because the site is so full of 'which pickset to buy' or 'what picks do i need' or 'what picks can i add' etc etc that its pointless me writing anything that is already here, in stead i choose to write this reply and waste my time doing this instead,

No offence you understand, i just dont see why theres a poll on this thread, if you look at the selers and see every pick being sold in every shop then those are the picks that anyone will reccomend, everyone prefers differant tools, why dont you use the ones you have then decide what you need ie a tool thats heavier, thinner, smarter, smaller, lighter, cheaper, differant form etc etc, its YOUR choice not ours, and it depends on how you pick and what feel you get from what you have,

I just wanted an opinion shrub, I don't want a full guide to what I should get (I added the pole to see IF I should add picks, and wanted the posts to tell me which).

Well, I thank everyone for there Ideas, and I actually was looking to add a bogota pick :).

But to me it looks like queen/king picks are pretty breakable, but I'm not a blind brute am I?

To answer the poll, yes, your set has "many of the basic tools" needed.

I'd recommend the Peterson Pry Bar as well as Peterson's "reach" pick.

It all depends on how hard you are on your picks. From my personal experience they are no more Breakable then any other pick or Bogota. Looks can be deceiving until you actuallly try them first hand. If any pick breaks or bends considerably, the picker is the problem.

There are of course other variables but i'm just stating the main fact of it all.

If you wanted opinion why make it a yes or no question or answer, just seems redundant to me,
