Actually, furthermore, I mean the holes in the cylinder. Why should those go all the way through?

Am I using the correct terms?
Cylinder = The thing the key goes in, which holds inner pieces of pins?
Hull = Holds the cylinder, holds the outer pins?

I guess I need to open one and see my self. Are these holes universal, or in just some brands?

Thanks for mentioning construction keys thou. Didn't know of the concept. Did some googling and now I am just a little bit wiser :)

Sorry about veering the thread into completelly different direction.

The holes don't actually go through the whole plug (or at least on Kwiksets), the bottom is like.. a rectangular hole...or ..space.. How bout I just take a pic :P .

Thanks! I think I got it.

That's for machining the key profile right?

Yes, but it's just how most cylinders are designed. The bottom of the key rests on the bottom of the cylinder. This assures accuracy of the plug, and not that the key is "floating" somewhere between the bottom and the middle-- at the mercy of machining tolerances.

I know at least 5 other people have mentioned this already but I'm going to do the same because you clearly didn't look around. My tip would be to replace your lock with a new one and not pick it.

As for the holes in the bottom of the lock below the cylinder the one of my yale standard rim cylinders has a plate which covers these holes, the lock works when its in or out and I pick it without it, but here it is: http://s180.photobucket.com/albums/x176 ... gp0107.jpg (the peice to the right of the pins)
