Use the search.
lots of info out there. just get a basic 5 pick set to start, hooks and half diamond. Dont get distraccted by the big expensive sets. you dont need them and most are duplicates of the basics anyway.

Get the "HPC deluxe" through foley belsaw first, and the "peterson just picks with plastic handles or assorted" second. You want a snowman, a gem, a reach, a motorola rake, a half diamond, and a short and long hook. Make a bogata rake and a set of king and queens.
^The ultimate set.
If you want to spoil yourself, order a set of falle progressive curves knockoffs.

In response to your question, I did it when I was first learning. I liked the southord long hook(get a couple and trim the hook to various sizes with a gem tip) and the double ended half diamond/rake. Add a snowman and a sawtooth "L" rake and you'll be the Master lock king. For the price you might aswell get the HPC deluxe. The case is nice.

Don't bother with the book. The stuff thats been posted over and over again and the Stickies on this site is a billion times better than what that little booklet contains. Just get a regular pick set and get familiar with the serach function.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Don't even take the book into consideration when buying picks. It came free with my 14 peice SO set, and not that expected it to be good or anything, but it's pretty much useless unless you have no idea of the basics of locks and picking - then it might be of some minor help. As Eyes said, 15 minutes at this place will give you more information than that book will.

I got a simple SouthOrd set in the beginning. You should search for this because I know when I was buying mine last January I searched the forums here and found 2-3 threads on this topic already.
Search is your best friend.
Hope your picking goes well.
