Good central site for cutaways and/or descriptions?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Good central site for cutaways and/or descriptions?

Postby absynthe » 5 Aug 2007 13:30

From some of the stickies it seems that there isn't really a good central site that has lists and pictures of interesting locks. Has anyone ever thought of making a site? Basically what I am thinking is a site that has a good index of maybe 100 locks from around the world.

I would think there would be two things needed:

1) Whoever started it or whatever group started it would need a pretty decent collection of locks (or collection of photos that they have rights to)

2) You would have to get permissions to use pictures that others have taken.

I think it might be tricky to get permission for lot of the nice cutaway pics because if the site ever became strong... their site would probably lose some hits.

Anyway.. I was thinking that since there are lots of people on here that have pictures of their locks... and I am sure contacts with locksport groups that gets locks for competition... there must be someway to get a good catalog of the more common locks.

So far my source for a good overview of locks in the world have been

1) Posts on this site
2) http://www.toool.nl/cutaway1.pdf (and future posts I hope)
3) http://www.crypto.com/photos/locks.html
4) Random searches finding this sort of thing (http://locksandsecurity.blogspot.com/20 ... ccess.html)

Since the community here seems pretty sharing... is there any interest in organizing people to take their old pictures or taking new ones and getting a pretty decent catalog going? It could be a sticky or perhaps even a sub-site that let you quickly jump to peoples pictures and see what a particular lock looks like or find out about new ones.

Anyway.. it seems like a number of people here are interested in finding cutaway pics and often have to search all over. Has this been discussed before or attempted? I would think that if all of the leg work and time got the page going... that many people would be happy about it (if it successfully highlighted and showed a very nice share of locks).

One of our regular users had a blog with some amazing pictures and breakdowns of locks. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the users name. He has a link to the blog in his signature. Hopefully he will read your post.

What is wrong with Lockenpedia except that it runs little slow?

And the blog in question is The_Masters (something like that).

I had never heard of lockenpedia but this seems like the perfect place. The only thing is that it isn't there yet. For example, I wanted to see what they had for the EVVA 3KS and there is about a paragraph on it. It mentions a picture but I don't see the corresponding picture.

And on the page for EVVA there are 4 pics of the MCS but no cutaways. I also looked up KABA and there is one lock there that I have not heard of. They have at least 4 solid lines of locks (even though they basically look the same, just more pins or angles of pins)

This would be a great place but I am not sure if enough people know about it. On the sticky about links for cutaways.. it is not listed. Of course.. I have basically no interesting locks in my collection so I have no room to speak.

It just seems like there are great pictures out there and lots of people in the community who have the locks.. but not really a central place where you can really browse lots of locks.

Hey, I remember writing that description. In fact, the same one is on my site, but it has pictures with it. :)
Here's the linkage:

If you really want to help out, you have my permission to take the photos and descriptions from my site and post them with the corresponding articles on lockenpedia--I've been meaning to do that for a while now.

Also, sorry for the shitty photos, I've been meaning to take new ones forever. You might want to check out protections-vol for some good locks, too.
