Bike Lock Security

My bike was recently stolen by cutting through the master lock - they even took the chain! Do you recommend anything besides buying the most expensive kryptonite lock (and besides the other obviousness). Thanks.

Do you think U or chain locks are easier to break into? These seem to be the best you can buy:

Personally I would get a heavy chain and a strong padlock over an expensive one. in reality one ones going to pick it. I would probably go with an abloy type or an Ingersoll (yes im still obsessed) just to make sure

I don't know; those Abloy padlocks look expensive (saw some for double the price of the top-end kryptonite or Onguard locks).

I said abloy type. There are many many copies around and none of them can be bumped open.

so for a $600 Cannondale or Trek bike, you wouldn't spend $60 on a nice PL350 Abloy padlock with 11 disc classic mechanism? I think that's a fair price. or at least get an ABUS Discus 24/70 it's only $25

I think Americans are spoiled by $6 dollar Master lock padlocks that claim to be bullet proof, but can be cut with a hacksaw in 30 seconds.

unless your next bike is a plain old $79 Huffy, spend the money on a good lock and chain.

Ok, so you think a 60 dollar Abloy would be more cut and saw resistent than the (~$80) top-end kryptonite?

we pick locks not hack them to bits.

This is sounding more and more like anyone looking to steal bikes could come on hear do some reading and keep an eye out for easy targets. So I'm out.

Arighty, here's my solution.

First, get some cheapbike you won't really need. A used one perhaps. Clean it up and make it look nice. Hook it up where you usually hook your bike up. Now, use a setup that looks real easy to saw through, break, etc (ie. some crappy looking wire/cable and lock). Now. The padlock is really an electoronically detonated explosive (not too much, but just enough  ), and the cable is the trip wire - as soon as it's cut, off goes the 'lock'. (Very simple circuit design, along with the detonation setup.)

Soon, that will be a very safe spot to leave your 'real' bike.

Problem solved.

Chill; he's just messing around (not that It's not a superb idea)

Anyway, I'd like some confidense surround my lock and chain's cut and saw protection without having to mangle my own equipment trying it.
