I used to make tension wrenches out of the metal strip you find in hanging file folders.

As a pipe smoker, I usually have a czech tool somewhere nearby. Pretty much a gimme there.

If you prove to me that you can pick a lock with a czech tool I'll buy you a Daniel Webster cigar.

Sounds like a fun bet. What kind of proof do you require?

I don't see why I couldn't shape the tool into a pick fairly easily. The metal isn't very good quality steel, so it wouldn't be something I'd want to use regularly, but I bet I could make it into something workable with only slight modification.

I'm still new to this, so I'd only be using it to pick one of my basic Ilco padlocks (the one pictured in this thread, but I'm pretty sure I could do it.

Ok, check this out:

It's ugly, but for something I just did quickly it's not too bad. In the spirit of McGyver, I just used hand files to make it, no power tools. (and in fact, for a lot of it, I just used the metal file on the multi-tool I carry with me.)

I was able to pick my Ilco padlock with it, though it was a bit of a tight fit. I also picked my Milwaukee Magnum 765 with it. That was much easier, as the Milwaukee padlock has a wider keyway.

I can post pictures of the pick in the padlocks if you like. I don't really have a way to post video, unfortunately.

Even if I don't get a cigar out of this, it was a fun thing to do.

So what's the verdict, Freakparade? Did I earn a cigar, or is this not good enough? (close but no cigar?)

It still functions quite well as a pipe pick, by the way. I opened a sealed tin this weekend of a particular Peterson blend that I enjoy, and I smoked it while practicing picking. The tin was aged somewhere between 10-15 years or so, and the resulting smoke was quite nice.

It looks like a pick, but have you picked a lock with it?

Yep, as I posted above:

If I were to do it again, I'd start the rake portion a little further back to leave a longer tip on it and get a better "snake" out of it.

Not really. Czech pipe tools run about $1-$1.50 around here, and I have several, so if I had destroyed it, it wouldn't have been a disaster.

As it is, mine is still useable for its intended purpose.

You win a cigar. I'm not sure about the Daniel Webster part though. It's a quote from an old John Wayne movie.

I am certain that one could disassemble an umbrella quite nicely with a multi-tool. Using a hammer, and then the pliers and file off of the multi-tool one could fashion quite a few picks and tension wrenches.
