Picking Posture?

Postby vrocco » 16 Aug 2007 20:36

This may sound silly, but is there a position you find it best to practice picking in?

I like to lay on the floor on my back and watch tv and pick. Should I be sitting up? Standing? In a chair?

Does it matter? What does everyone think?

Now I realize that eventually you get good enough not to think about such things, but I am asking as a beginner just starting out.

I like picking nude. It gives me more of a feel for the lock    .

For standard pin-tumbler locks, you'll find that gravity acts differently on pins that are set, depending on the lock's orientation. So, you will get a slightly different feel from the lock, if you're holding it right-side up or upside down (or laying on your back). :-)

And if you're not supposed to be picking wherever you are, the cops might not notice the picks, and just get you on indecent exposure, although concealing them would be painful

Back on topic, I like picking in a chair while watching tv, it's good to do it semiconciously I reckon...

Any position you feel comfortable in.

For me it's sitting upright in a comfortable chair while watching TV or listening to some music.

I do the same thing as JackNco but I put my lock in a Panavise to hold it in place at the corner of my desk.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I use one of those as well... they're a very nice way of "mounting" the lock in a convenient orientation, without needing to actually have all of your locks permanently mounted (which can eat up a lot of space very quickly!). (Google for "Panavise" if you've never seen one.)
