I am picking a padlock with 4 pins

apply tension search for binding pin.. Ok got it (i think) i push it down a little (like 1 mm) and it clicks and the hull shifts very slightly.. Thinking the pin is set?? Well thats where im scuppered cos after that the pin still has that springyness.. I just dont get this at all... I can bust open my mini gold padlock but i dont understand whats happnin here :S

Hi there,
is your pad lock a more expensive type. Im pretty new to single pin picking and I am experiencing a similar problem with a master lock i have purchased. when i pick one of the pins the plug moves slightly in the direction of the applied torque but the lock doesn't open. I suspect my padlock may have one or more spool pins. Might be your problem to? just a thought.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think that a 4-pin padlock will have spools. Padlocks can be however sometimes harder to pick than any standard 5-cylinder, because you have less space there. Maybe you should try picking a lock with wider keyhole to imagine what's happening there and then move to this one? Just a thought.

It's possible that your lock contains serrated pins, the first padlock I tried to pick had em. --.--
Imho it is much easier to pick "real" cylinders. Much bigger than padlocks.

So, my tip would be; go buy a cylinder, repin it to 1 pin, get the feeling of the pin, move on to 2 pins etc.
If you wanna save $$ go repin a padlock and practise on it. Most can be repinned by drilling. (Illusion has a guide in the locks section)
