Hi,
Im very new to this forum but would like to become an active member. I recently purchased 2 padlocks (pictured below) and after no success in raking open the master lock, i turned to the internet. Thats when i found this forum, and got my first leason on secrurity pins and the theory behind single pin picking.
Today I purchased a lockwood door lock with removeable plug, and pulled out 3 pins leaing only number 1 and 5. when turning the plug clockwise the first bining pin is #5. with light tension i push the pin up and i hear a faint click, and i believe the pin is set as i can push the pin down slightly and it springs back a little as the MIT guide suggests it should.
My problem is when I then try to lift pin #1, it moves freely as if it is not binding at all. other times i can lift #1 but the lock still doesn't turn. I have managed to SPP the lock a few times but I have not found any consistancy in my technique yet. Am i doing something obviously wrong here?
(sorry about the picture quality)
Regards Elbarto

Well if you kept the lockwood pins according to the key (with the 1 and 5) then you are probably having trouble getting around a High-Low pinning making it hard to reach one without over setting the other.
Try out d_b's Guide ( HERE)
or the really pretty version of that, The LI guide

Wouldn't you be better off leaving pins 1 and 2, rather than one and 5?
Or have I misunderstood?

I left #1 and #5 as i have easy access to the back of the lock and if i want i can turn the lock over and see how far i am lifting the pin etc.
Despite this i am still having trouble, its as if i am lifting the first pin i try and pick too far, but it feels like it is set. I am in the middle of reading the guide UWSDWF has refered me to.
IF i still have trouble i might change the position of the pins around to see if that makes a difference.
Thanks for your replies

did you take all the top pins and springs out of the holes where you are not using a bottom pin? Count the pins you have in the pile on your bench, and they must come out to an even number of pins.
setting up a lock with two pins widely separated would from my understanding be the best way to experience the binding of one over the looseness of the other, it should be a clear lesson so Im thinking that something else is going on.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Hi raimundo,
I put #1 and #2 pins into the cylinder as Digital Blue's guide for the beginer suggests and managed to pick the lock by SPP once but now i cant seem to do it again. I know pin # 1 must be set quiet high and it is also the first binding pin, but everytime i try and pick it its as if #1 false sets a little low.
#2 the becomes the binding pin and i can tell from the key that it only needs to be lifted a little way but when i set it (at least i think i have set it) the lock still doesn't turn.
I am sure its something i am doing with pin #1. all the guides i have read suggests i haven't set the first pin correctly as far as i can tell.
I will have a break from the locks for tonight and tomorrow i will try your method of setting the pins further apart raimundo.
like all things good i'm sure it will just take a little bit of perseverance. can get a little frustrating tho when you can pick it one minute then spend an hour trying to figure out why it seemed so easy the last time
for those interested in the pins that came out of the lockwood door lock (purchased at bunnings for $34 AUD)
[position, driver pin height, key pin hieght]
[1, 0.221, 0.166]
[2, 0.144, 0.254]
[3, 0.222, 0.180]
[4, 0.144, 0.270]
[5, 0.221, 0.210]
springs were 0.550" long
pin diameter was 0.114"
all pins were standard
Thanks
