Broke my second hook within 1 1/2 years(Being my favorite and most used) on a quite weathered no.40 disc lock; and such a nice pick it was (laminated ripple core and all) from lockpicktools. Just wondering how fast everyone else goes through picks, if at all ? so for amusement...
1. What kind of pick?
2. What brand?
3. How old was the pick?
4. What kind of lock did you break it on?

Yes, I can definately relate to that, seeing as I like at least try to use my short hook, even when I know somthing else is better for the job. heh.

I have been working with the same set of petersons all of time time for close to four years. I have broken one southord pick when I was first starting out and have not broken a pick picking locks since. I HAVE ruined picks using them for other things besides picking however. In all I have broken or ruined maybe 4 picks.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

So true I ruined a SO usiug it as a flat fead screw dirver
Dropped a few in the crapper .. he guys gotta have something to read of pick open.. it's an unwritten law
And as bad as it sounds for hte pick quality, use a Sawtooth rake from SO un sanded to cut through rope a few times.
Also use a pick to scatch my back sometimes.. locks picks just have so many uses haha

So far I've only broken two picks in the past 8 years but that was because I used too much pressure on the tension wrench. I've since learned to ease off a bit and haven't broken one since.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I've irreparably bent a couple of picks, but the only pick I've ever actually "broken" was one of those Majestic High Tech profile picks. I have no idea why those are made of spring steel, it just seems like a poor design decision. That one was a bummer because I'm not aware of any distributor that sells individual picks for replacement.
I also have a key extractor that is pretty screwed up from using it to open a package

Ive snapped a couple of SO short hooks. that was more wear and bending back a lot. You wont break a Peterson hook by mistake.

Here's where I can officially confess:
I broke my Rubber-Handled Peterson Reach (the deep-curve looking one) in half. It was entirely my fault, however. I was trying it out as a light rake in a Medeco payphone lock. It was also unsanded so it had some nice corners to catch on. I still have the remains because I can't bring myself to throw it away.
Also, a buddy of mine tried to rake a wafer lock with my key extractor...wow. Well, that ended with the extractor permanently stuck in the lock. Nothing would separate them. Before you pass too much judgment, he was not quite a newbie and just didnt know what an extractor was for. The guy can pop American 5200s consistently so he's not all bad

speaking of medecos and raking haha; I wore down one of my rakes practicing on a medeco pay phone lock cylinders I got on on the bay of E, 3 for $25 all together; I'm sure I can still use the pick on a cheaper lock though heh.

Some of my picks, I've had for 20 years. My brother broke a Majestic hook borrowing my set once but I've never broken a hook.
I've got a few that aren't straight any more and a few that were bent and bent back into shape enough times that I've just ordered replacements but I've never broken one.

I never broke a pick I made with hand files but I bent and broke a few of the first ones I made with my dremel tool. I now dip them in water every few seconds to keep the temper of the metal. I left my picks on my desk last year and someone bent one of them tring to pry the back off of their watch. It was a southord standard stainless hook and I bent it back but don't trust it now.
