New Homebrew Pen Pick

Just Finished this today. I made a tension wrench and a pick that fits inside this hand drill I bought from Harbor Freight. The handle unscrews to store the drill bits, but I thought it'd work great to hold picks as well. I started with only one pick, but hope to make more/different designs.

I added the pocket clip, which was from a broken tire pressure gauge.











It works fairly well.

BTW, I copied the design from a pick I already had, using needle files also from Harbor Freight.

That's a good idea - very much like the Dyno Kwick Pick.
The only problem is that the pick blade is so short - is that a limitation of what you can fit in the handle?

I tried something very similar with a pin vice. Worked on but i coudnt get it to grip as well as i wanted.

The Kwik Pick was my inspiration.

The pick blade is rather short, it could probably be about 1/2" longer, but the piece of metal I used to make the blade was already that length.

Thats a really cool DIY pick. I know there has been discussions about building a pickset using a small hand drill or exacto knife tool as a handle before but no one had bother to actually go through with it.

Good job! The Kwik Pick's pick length should be just about the proper length you would need without it being to long to fit in the chamber of the hand drill.

Will look forward to seeing a whole set when you get them done.

Nice work, I've made some similar things over the years and learned that you must use them while practicing so when you get the call to use them in the field you're not caught with your pants down.

The hand drill (the main body) was about $7 from HF. The pick and tension wrench were made from some scrap pieces I had laying around. I guess the only other expense was my time - not sure how much that's worth.

You could easily fit 6-8 picks + a wrench inside. At this point, I only have two picks and a wrench made.

They can be switched out in about 15-20 seconds, and they don't really get stuck or hard to open, there seems to be more of a problem getting them clamped in place. Sometimes you really have to crank it down tight. It helped to make a small bend in the lower end of the picks so it fits more snugly.
