Schlage Pin Spacing

Postby Knowthebird » 13 Aug 2007 20:51

I just wanted to check quick, do all schlage locks use the same pin spacing?

I can't find the site I used to know of with a bunch of depth and spacing information.

If schlages do not all have the same spacing, is the spacing in the locks for the sc9 & sc10 key blanks the same as that for the sc4?

Thanks ahead for any and all help

I thought so, and some site selling a key cutting machine made me really think so, but I'm glad to know for sure before I cut my only keys :-)

thanks

Cut was too deep

Postby Sockeye89 » 26 Aug 2007 20:22

To make new key's on my key machine for a schlage dead bolt (using Ilco 1145/Star 5sh1 blanks) I went from confident to confused in a heart beat. After shimming, I mic'd the pin's where #1 (shoulder) pin was .24 My pinning kit chart shows a depth of cut to be .260 Yet, I saw .260 was way too deep a cut and ended up mic'ing it at about .027 to get it flush.
#2 worked better. pin measured .30 which needed a .200 deep cut and that was my mic setting. Way out to 2tenths.
#3 got me in trouble. This pin measured .28 and the chart says .215 for a cut, so being it was at .20 I cranked'er another .015 and wall-laa. Way too deep. I see the ED is .500 but there's something I didn't add-up or subtract.
I got key's made-but I'm missed something somewhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated and Thanks in advance.

Not being a donkey here but do you know the proper way to use a micrometer? What type of micrometer do you have?

What kind of machine are you using ???

If a Framon (1 or 2) you must use the correct blade.. else you have a problem with your machine.
Try cutting a 6 cut across the keys.. then measure the depth of cut .. they should all be within a few .001 ths of each other.

Thanks keysman---It's an FB200 but I discovered today what I needed and ordered was a CD for 'Depth and spacing charts" to cross reference the codes.
