to tell if it is key retaining or not pull the cylinder out and look at the locking cam or retainer assembly if it is half and half where half is raised and half is milled like in picture 9 of his post it is key retaining and if it is 1/4 raised and 3/4 milled it is non key retaining

Thanks, Jack, I knew I had seen both, and the question I have is does the famous bypass, for which the stainless disc is the patchup, work on the one with the half milled? as the end of the cylinder would be occupying that other half wouldn't it. And modertators relax, I am not revealing the cheap trick, that can be revealed by petersens lockpick site, I am only asking if the difference mentioned by Jacknco matters in wether or not it would work? Seems to me it would block it.

Funny thing, Ive never checked out this thread till today when I caught the 5200 series. Today my friend let me have a lock he had. "hmm this looks like a nice lock." took a while to pick...I wondered if it had security pins in it...had my jack knife in my pocket and picked the lock in my lap.

I finally really put some light on it and look at it while Im picking, and notice the first pin was getting stuck, and I wasnt sure if it was because it was weathered or if was just the lock. I turned the lock so the pins were upside down and gave it medium tension...got it open. It took a bit of tension to fully open it with my jack knife tension tool; then I pulled it open and presto.

I found it helpful to pick it with the pins facing down and a light/medium tension; and that was with a short hook on a jack knife and the tension tool.

well I think most members would be reaching for the foldout sets last but if it works for you than thats all that counts.

well I wasnt at home, so all I had on me was a jack knife...If i had a regular pick and tensioner available, Im sure it would have been 2x as easy. 8)

You are a better man than I. I am still fooling with this thing. I can't find a real good tension wrench to fit into the padlock. I am gonna try and take it apart and just pick the plug out of the padlock body. Let's see how that goes.

I made one out of a wiper insert .8mm thick and 2.38mm wide. with two 45° bends. the entire thing is 6.78mm deep with about 3.5mm entering the lock. I used top tension while pushing away from the body of the lock. gives you a nice grip and plenty of space to work in.

I measured the tension tool I used for ya, because this one seems to sit almost perfect in the keyway: the head is 13x4mm on a 90 degreee bend (handle as long as u want), and the metal of the tension wrench is right at 1mm; so anything give or take 5 more mm should be golden man. hope that helps. give us your status when u get it or if you get stumped. 8)

Thanks to both Jack and Cartoon. I by chance just found a really good deal on a Peterson set that includes the little u-bend-it tool. I should have it in a few days so I will be able to make something custom that fits well.
