To start out a small 5 or 10 piece set will do you well. The half diamond is used for pin tumbler locks and the ball picks are most commonly used for wafer locks. Their is a big difference in tension tools, paclocks need slimmer tension tools than pin tumblers. Different lengths will effect how much tension and how comfortable you are picking. My advice is to make several different tension tools out of windshield wiper blade inserts and see what works best for you.

Hey dor_la!

You don't need all those picks, all you need is a short hook, and if there is a high pin, a long hook!

A hook pick is used to lift the pins!

:D

Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.

Yes you should buy that set. Thats the one most of us here started with and it is a very good set for a beginner. You'll be very happy with them.

It is true that most of the time you will be using the hooks to learn with as they are the main tool for single pin picking. I use the nine peice SouthOrd set. THe reason to get a set when you are starting is you may well not know what tools you prefer. There are some people who prefer to use half diomonds as they tend to move more smoothly in and out of the lock (can't remember who it is or if the reasons right) but if one tool does not work for what you are doing it is nice to have others you can turn to. The rakes are not so good for learning but are nice to have to play with tension while opening padlocks. The ball picks are used for wafers how ever seldom you may use them. The nice thing about this set is that it includes 4 tension tools which are important to have a selection. I have since made more to supliment my set. http://www.lockpickshop.com/C1500.html This looks a good selection for a cheaper price than my smaller set. With it you would have all you needed to pick for some time, until you feel the need to experiment with other tools. They would be a good buy.

Most of the picks I have in my set is just a different variety of hook picks for locks with warding designs that require a certain type of tool like a slimline for complicated keyways. I only keep two different types of diamond picks and one rake pick in my set which I almost never use.
