Lockpick Shop and Australia

Postby Fah_Cue » 7 Sep 2007 6:11

Hey i was wondering if picks would have trouble getting picks shipped to australia. I bought my set from Whitehat a while ago but since hs gone i was wondering where i could pick up some picks (pun not intended).

Also ive heard of people putting the order under a fake business name to help it get pass, good idea? What are the chances the picks would be noticed and stopped?

Thanks

I'm from melbourne and I have had no trouble getting picks sent over here. The first time i ordered picks it was from http://www.lockpickshop.com and customs even opened the package and it was still cleared, so you should have no trouble at all. I've also ordered things from http://www.lockpicks.com which included auto tools and a pick gun and that got cleared fine. The chances of the picks getting noticed? It's probably likely that they will. Chances of them getting stopped? Highly unlikely.

I wouldn't worry about putting the order under a fake business name, I can't see it helping at all. It would be unnecessary.

Hope this helps.

I got a pick gun from the UK for www.ukbumpkeys.com. plug spinners, tension tools and lockpicks from www.lockpicks.com in the past (most inthe last few weeks) which all cleared fine.

I am waiting on a set of bump keys tho, Its been a week since i ordered them from the UK so im not too concerned yet.

Hope that helps. I wouldn't be too worried. I was surprised to hear Marco mention he ordered auto tools and got them through customs, I thought I had read something about them being restricted. Maybe I misinterpreted, but I don't think i would risk it.

Since 2003 I have MAYBE only heard of one person who's packages containing pick tools were searched and taken away by customs. But this never really happens majority of the time.

I've been ordering lockpicks and related tools online and had it shipped through USPS, FedEx and UPS every year since 2001 and I've never had any problems.

Funny thing is some places will ask you to put the name of your business or company you work for on the online order form to "verify" that you can "legally" possess burglery tools but many of these companies never really call you back to make sure you're not just making things up. High Tech Tools only called me back and left a message once when I tried to order on the second time and I never called them back when I was working as a mechanic.

Now I work for a locksmith shop and I always put down the company name in the order form and since then they have never called to confirm my claims ever since. The only place that has contacted me back recently was Pro-Lok when I tried to order a slim jim and a rubber wedge (that reminds me, I gotta call them back).

Of course I'm not encouraging anyone to put fake business names on their order forms, I just wanted to point out that most companies and customs really don't care 90% of the time.

Australia's customs laws are fundamentally different than many other countries and hence the ease at getting product into the country.

The USA is different because local laws actually prevent the sending of picks and tools through postal services. It is a federal offense to do so. However, if packages are marked appropriately, they will still be x-rayed but will likely pass the required clearance and get sent.

The system is openly abused and the authorities are too busy dealing with more important matters to worry sufficiently about the tiny lock tools industry.
