Hey, I'm really interested in getting into lockpicking. I think I can buy a $30 set from lockpickshop.com but before I do I want to learn more.
I read the LockSport tutorial and I understand the basic concept but I have been looking for something a bit more detailed and covered more than just the concept, like the different kinds of picks and their uses, like what a rake is for and stuff.
Also, what kind of cheap lock should I get for my first try? Well, kind of my first try. I was able to pick the really cheap lock on my dad's gun cabinet when we moved and couldn't find the key. I didn't really know what I was doing so it was more of a lucky fluke kind of thing.
Is there some kind of way to gauge the difficulty of a lock before I buy it or would I just have to buy a bunch of cheap ones and try them all?

I would get a copy of the MIT guide to lockpicking and read that.
As far as a good beginner lock, maybe either a Master padlock or a kwikset key in knob. I would tend to recommend the kwikset because you can learn to repin it easier than a cheap Master padlock.
Good luck and have fun!

I went to the kwikset website and I have a few questions. Would I have to buy like a deadbolt or something and take the lock out of that or is there another option to just get the lock?
I'm a college student on a really tight budget so I'd need to find something relatively cheap. Any idea what kind of pricerange i'd be looking at for a lock that i can repin?

Get a kwikset deadbolt. You won't have to take anything apart to start picking and it's repinnable. You can get one at lowes for less than $20. If you want a cheaper deadbolt go to Wal-Mart and get a Mountain Security brand. It's basically a discount Kwikset.

Also if you are trying to go about it the cheap way stop in and talk to a local lock smith if you ask nicely they may give you a couple old lock cylinders. At least when i went and talked to them about getting some to make a cutaway they gave me 2 for free.

Thanks a lot for all the help. I read the MIT guide and it answered all my questions, I can't wait to try scrubbing.
I just ordered the 14 piece kit with grips from lockpickshop.com can't wait for them to get here! And I'm going to Lowes tonight to pick up a deadbolt too.
Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it

That error message is being looked into. Your post reply will still be accepted, you just have to return to the topic, but not by pushing the back button in your browser.

Getting the pick in the lock
Hey, this is probably a really stupid question, but i got a paper clip flattened out and used some needle nosed pliers to make it into a rake (i think thats what its called, a simple angle at the tip of it) and i couldn't even get it into the deadbolt we have on the door, its says ezset on it. It has little teeth on the sides of the keyhole for the grooves on the key.
Is that just because I was using a paper clip or was I just not doing it right? Nothing I have read so far mentioned anything like that.

i would advise against trying to pick a lock you depend on such as the deadbolt on your door.

I agree with the post above mine.
You probably are not going to be able to pick a dead bolt with a paper clip. Have you read the MIT guide to lock picking and/or the LSI guide?
If not start there. The reason you probably have not been able to insert the paper clip is because you are not pushing the first pin up a little to get it out of the way. Also are you using a tension wrench? If so do not apply the tension till you have inserted the pick a little bit. It will help you insert the pick.

Deadbolts can be picked with paperclips. It's not a good idea. Especially the deadbolt that is on your door. Paperclips break off easily than you will have a problem. Also, if you have an ez set lock on your door replace it with something more secure.
