When i first got my extractors I immediately broke off several keys in several locks to play with them. It was at that point I found things are not always as easy as they may seem.....

if it's a deadbolt you can pretty easily take it apart and just push the piece out from the inside, assuming you have access to the inside at this point.

anything else requires skills and patience, but that being said I usually just use plumber's snake i buy at the dollar store to make my key extractors.
Usually something like a very thin hook pick should be good.

cut a thin shim out of some hard steel like the spring inside a dog leash or tape measure that winds up. this can be cut with as 45 degree angle on the leading edge and should be as wide as the flat side of the top (cut edge) of the key, this can go in alongside the key and the 45degree angle will lift the pins to the top of the keyway and you can pull that key out.
