unlocking a locked upvc window

Postby wildbrew » 16 Jun 2004 5:38

i have moved into a new house. one of the upvc windows is locked (lock on handle, small top window) and i dont have a key.
Is there a way to unlock it without resorting to a new window or violence?
Can the lock be drilled out and replaced witha new handle and lock?

Some pictures would be handy depending on the lock it might be an easy pick, do you know how to pick locks? Depending on the lock it might be an easy lock to pick so if you want to attempt to pick it make some tools, once again depending on the lock so I cant really help without pictures...but if you want the locked changed find yourself a local locksmith...

Recap on the locked window
when we moved in, the handle was in the locked postion with the window always open couldnt be closed.
I took the two screws out and reset the lock.
I closed the window and tried to open it and i pushed the button (some have a button to open them..not this one..sigh!) on the lock and CLICK!!!... it locked! and cant be opened

The window with the handle up!! :D ..beforeI locked it by accident

The Key hole pop's up when unlocked.

If it cant be picked i dont mind drilling it, the handle is in a bit of a state.
but i've never picked a lock and will give it a go if possible

It's worth giving picking a try on these types of locks, even if you don't know entirely what you're doing.

The reason I say this is, for example the locks on my DG windows only have one wafer. Simply apply tension and lift the wafer. Couldn't be simpler.

It goes without saying that not all window locks are the same (The type on my windows might be in the minority).

Do you turn the handle to open the window or pull the handle stright out? If you pull it stright out, it may be like a handle I have on a window. To pick it I had to slightly hold the handle DOWN while picking. If it turns, I suppose you could just pick it like a normal lock.

on the note of trying to pick this lock...What tools do i need?.
I dont have any lock picking tools at my disposal. only some curby grips, paper clips and tweezers that would fit the lock.

Window lock

Postby Romstar » 16 Jun 2004 20:18

Okay, a paper clip bent into a hook shape and those tweezers should be all you need.

Use the hook to lift the wafers, and the tweezers to turn. As mentioned before, many of these things only have one wafer.

Also, failing the picking, take out the one screw, grasp the handle and twist until you expose the other screw. That will remove the handle.

I tried to pick it for apbout an hour and no luck!
I reverted to using the drill and drilled the lock out
After looking at the actual lock once it was drilled could have done it by picking it there were 4 rods (dont know the tech name for it) and was only locking the window with the 4th rod.

Thanx for everybodys support and knowledge on this delema.

Well at least you realized what was needed to pick the lock. If you do pick up picking then knowing what is stopping you from opening the lock is the biggest step. Once you understand a lock and know how it is setup things become a lot easier. I hope you can replace everything easily and that you do actually stay with lock picking. Hope things work out well.
