Although some may disagree, I recommend learning Schlage cylinders early. If you start with 1 pin and work your way up, you should do quite well. Yes, they are a bit more challenging than Kwikset or Master, but I think they respresent a more "normal" lock. It just seems like you can learn more from them. Plus, you get lots of practice repinning it as add/remove pins. If you looked around various locksmith shops asking for a "used Schlage key-in-knob or mortise cylinder", I'm sure one could be found for a good price. However, I wouldn't mention that you're learning to pick just yet unless the lockies seems really friendly. Once, you get better, learn more terminology and mechanics, its generally easier to get lockies to talk about picking. That said, good job so far!
