Postby SsBloodY » 31 Jul 2007 15:23

Well I am new I still cant feel good enough whath happens inside the lock and if there is a pin wich wont move does this mean that I picked it and it just fell down to the shear line where i cant push it more...?

Maybe because I really aply too much tension when i start thinking olny about the pins and maybe that's the reason it wont move.

Last 30 minutes i started feeling things much better and with lesss tension the pins that wont move move hard and there is a SOUNDY really soundy click I think its the click witch indicates i have picked the binding pin (hope it is )
I am picking simple euro cylinder 5 pins now. And somethims i pickd it with no problem but something strange happend to me twice i pick the back 4 pins and i apply tension all the time push the first pin and nothing happens as it isn't the binnding i guess i have missed some pin but i pushed down the first pin looked at the lock and all other pins are down a again push that pin and nothing happens just have to start over...

This can easily happen when you push any of pins further down into the hull. Also this can happen - 4 pins appears to be set and 5th one is still on the spring even with strong tension - then you have false set ( overset or underset ) one of the previous pins. There are 2 options - try to find the underset pin ( if there is one ) and push him further to the hull to set him ( may be more than one pin ), or, try again, there is no option I know that can help you with overset pin.

Have you read the LSI guide ? It's explained here pretty good with pictures...

How can you tell if it's a boy pin or a girl pin and does it make any difference :-)

Light tension is really the key here. What brand of lock is it? On some of the better quality locks with tighter tolerances, it can be tricky for any beginner to feel what any of the pins in the locks are doing.

Well if its a pin-in-a-pin system, it is shemale. Else its a boy :)

Wait, I thought if a regular pin tumbler lock had aftermarket spool and serrated pins installed in them to make them more "secure", that would make it a tranny since it is posing as a high security lock when it really isn't.

Perhaps 'pin' is a masculine noun in Slavakian (if that's a language).

Yes, it's a boy pin in our language. Gate is a girl here, music is also girl :D

SsBloodY did you try to disassemble the lock ? I wasn't able to pick one until I disassembled it and discovered that 3 of 5 pins were spool, and a last hole was drilled a bit wider. It actually was a standard euro cylinder. It really helps you visualize what you are doing when you know what's inside. Try digital blue's guide with assembling the lock with one pin, then two, three and so on.

I learned on half-assembled lock, so I could see the keyhole from the opposite side, helped me with the last pin.

To the tension - not much tension is required in general. Force is not the thing you need. You need to feel in which state the pin is. When your hand is tired, take a break and return later. Also try to listen. You can very easily learn how it feels when a pin is set when you are picking a lock with only 2 pins ( assembled by you ).

I had very big troubles with oversetting, so it's probably your problem too. It's hard to select one of two pins that are feeling almost the same, they have the same pressure, or so. But only one of them is binding. Push the wrong one and you can easily overset it and you can then start over.

Hope this long post helped :D
