recommend a lock

Postby raimundo » 4 Oct 2007 6:44

I think what he means is that hes looking for someone to recommend a typical practice lock for him to aquire. His profile dosent mention where hes at, and he needs advice from someone in that part of the world. Different locks are common in different places :)

http://www.ukbumpkeys.com/dpp.html these things?

Well I haven't played with them but the principle is the same although by the looks of that set you should be rolling the pick not lifting. but i could be way off as i haven't used them.

They look pretty similar to the Souber MTL picks.

The "depending on the way the pins bind" is the key here. The idea that one should pick directionally is a fallacy. You pick in the order the pins bind... always. Granted, it is common for a lock to bind *either* front to back or back to front (this is the source of the misconception that there is a right or wrong way), but that isn't always true.

For instance... let's assume a typical 5 pin lock, the front pin being pin 1. The lock might bind in order 54321, or it might bind in order 12345. Either of these would be the most likely. However, the lock could bind in order 25341. Where would a "front to back" or "back to front" strategy get you?

Learn to pick by feel and then it's just a game of hunting for the binding pin.

Happy picking,

db
